National Institute of Statistical Sciences

Graduate Student Network

ABOUT

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) is a national organization that works on issues related to information and quantitative analysis.  The goal of the NISS Graduate Student Network is to create connections among graduate students from different academic institutions. Under this network, activities are organized to help students tackle challenges of graduate programs and help with their future careers. Students can share their experiences regarding their programs or an internship they did, and webinars and workshops can be organized around a topic of interest.  In addition, we hope that this network will be beneficial throughout the student's career even after they graduate from their programs.

NEWS & RECENT ACTIVITIES

The NISS Graduate Student Network hosted the 3rd two-day Graduate Student Network Research Conference which took place on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 12pm - 5 pm ET.

The GSN Research Conference featured graduate student presentations, a Scientific Writing Short Course presented by Donald Richards (Department of Statistics at Penn State), and two Invited Talks: Day 1 featured Daniel Jeske (Department of Statistics at UC Riverside) and Day 2 featured Xihong Lin (Harvard University).

A special Thank You to this year's sponsor Procter and Gamble (P&G), who is sponsoring this for the 2nd time and is an active NISS Industry Affiliate!

The NISS Graduate Student Network hosted a new short course on quarto! The instructor for this short course was Dr. Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel from the Department of Statistical Science at Duke University.

Quarto is the next generation of R Markdown for publishing, including dynamic and static documents and multi-lingual programming language support. With Quarto you can create documents, books, presentations, blogs or other online resources. This workshop introduced us to authoring Quarto documents using RStudio Visual Editor, which provides a user interface for editing all of Pandoc markdown. We also got a brief look into different formats (such as slides), publishing Quarto documents to QuartoPub, and writing scientific manuscripts with Quarto.

Thank you to our Instructor Dr. Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel!
