Dr. Nishi Patel, M.D., is a prominent cardiologist whose career has been defined by both his technical expertise and a steadfast commitment to improving access to high-level cardiac care for all. Based at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, Dr. Patel has become a leader in advanced heart failure and cardiac critical care, blending clinical practice, research, education, and telemedicine leadership to deliver better outcomes for patients across both urban and rural communities.
Dr. Patel’s path in medicine began at Drexel University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2009. His early interest in the intricate workings of the human body propelled him to Drexel University College of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. in 2013. During these formative years, Dr. Patel distinguished himself as a dedicated and curious student, drawn to the challenges and potential of cardiovascular medicine.
He pursued his Internship and Residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he deepened his understanding of internal medicine and honed a skillset that would serve as the foundation for his later specialization. Driven by a desire to work on the frontlines of lifesaving therapies, he undertook advanced fellowship training in Cardiovascular Disease and then in Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. These intensive experiences provided exposure to the most complex cases in heart failure, transplant medicine, and cutting-edge device therapies.
Dr. Patel has since achieved board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac CT, and Nuclear Cardiology, affirming his breadth and depth of expertise.
At WellSpan York Hospital, Dr. Patel’s practice focuses on the care of patients with severe and advanced cardiac conditions. He is particularly known for managing critically ill individuals requiring specialized life support—such as ECMO, Impella, and LVAD therapy—and overseeing care for heart transplant candidates. Under his stewardship, the hospital’s heart failure team has evolved into a regional center of excellence, keeping patients close to their homes and families, minimizing the need for travel to distant tertiary centers, and delivering nuanced, compassionate care.
Dr. Patel played a key role in developing a comprehensive congestive heart failure care center for central Pennsylvania, which now provides coordinated care throughout the whole patient journey—from acute intervention in the ICU to long-term outpatient management. His advocacy for preventive care and technology adoption is evident in the hospital’s use of CardioMEMS remote monitoring, as well as his emphasis on education for both patients and their families.
Recognizing that recovery after cardiac events can be as much about mental and emotional support as it is about physical healing, Dr. Patel has developed a unique clinic for cardiogenic shock survivors. Here, he and his team address the holistic needs of patients who have survived life-threatening heart events, helping them regain confidence and independence.
Nishi Patel has also instituted protocols for virtual and molecular autopsies in cases of sudden cardiac death. This initiative educates family members about their genetic risk and empowers them to make informed decisions about their cardiovascular health.
Dr. Patel’s reach extends well beyond the walls of his hospital. As the National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Physicians (now Access TeleCare), he leads one of the nation’s most extensive multispecialty telemedicine programs, serving hundreds of hospitals, many of which are in rural or resource-limited settings. He oversees cardiac imaging initiatives, ensuring that echocardiography and cardiac CT diagnostics are available in communities that have traditionally been underserved.
His passion for telemedicine developed early in his career, having witnessed firsthand the care gap for patients in remote areas. Dr. Patel recognized telehealth as a crucial tool for bridging this divide, and he now works tirelessly to implement best-in-class imaging standards and to train providers across the country. This work has enabled countless patients to receive timely, expert diagnoses and consultations without the hardship of traveling long distances.
Dr. Patel is an active researcher and academic. His scientific career began in Dr. Harpreet Singh’s lab, where he contributed to research on heart failure mechanisms and advanced echocardiographic techniques. Over the years, Dr. Patel has published extensively on a range of topics, including cardiac device therapies and molecular cardiology. His work has appeared in major journals, and he has presented at prestigious conferences, including the Heart Failure Society of America and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
He recently received the Zoll Foundation Research Grant to investigate further the genetic and molecular underpinnings of sudden cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock. Dr. Patel also serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Cardiology and Cardiac CT sections of StatPearls, contributing to the continuing education of healthcare professionals nationwide.
Dr. Patel is deeply committed to education. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and frequently lectures at York Hospital. He has earned the Golden Apple Award for his mentorship of students and trainees. He is also a peer reviewer for several respected journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology and CardioRenal Medicine.
Dr. Patel is a member of several leading professional societies, including the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the Heart Failure Society of America, among others. He supports several charities, including the American Heart Association, the International Esperanza Project, and the World Surgical Foundation.
In his personal life, Dr. Patel is an avid martial artist, practicing Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He enjoys outdoor pursuits and believes that physical wellness and resilience enrich his medical practice and personal fulfillment.
Dr. Nishi Patel’s career reflects a rare blend of clinical excellence, research innovation, educational leadership, and heartfelt advocacy for his patients and community.
