Beatable without update? Yes, with issues
Tested by Jeisse C.
This game is fully playable from the cartridge. I was able to achieve 100% completion, but there is a caveat, which I will go over below:
The game was created by one person, so I am taking that into full consideration for this test, but the game is lacking quite a bit of polish.
Some issues encountered were pop ins, shadow flickering, animation issues, software errors, and a bug which prevents from being able to obtain 2 pocket watches (this game’s collectibles), which *could* have prevented 100% completion, but there is a work around.
Let’s start with the 2 pocket watches bug. This occurred for me on the second to last boss fight in the ice world (Iceceratops Area) . Within this boss level, there are a total of 70 pocket watches. I was only able to obtain 68. The 2 that I am missing, don’t seem to appear at all. I have ran through this level many times and I was unable to find these 2 missing watches. Which causes another issue. It appears that if the player unlocks 9280 pocket watches, this will unlock a secret level. I was able to obtain a total of 9278 pocket watches, 2 pocket watches short. Since I was unable to find the two missing pocket watches, I went online to see if this was a known bug, which it seems to be, and thankfully there was a workaround. There is a level called “Hare Today, Gong Tomorrow,” which has its own bug which could be exploited. This level has a total of 900 pocket watches, but once the level is completed, the player can re-enter the level, and find an extra 4 watches. This isn’t supposed to happen, but thankfully this put my total to 9282 watches . Again, in order to unlock the secret level, I needed 1980, and so by using this work around, I was able to have enough to open up the secret level.
Once I was done with the secret level, I was able to complete the game 100%, by having 10,002 pocket watches out of 10,000 (I have the extra two using the work around) and 115 out of 115 medals. All this worked without having to download the patch.
Now, the animation issues, it seems like the game doesn’t render certain movements when it should. For example, when the character jumps, there is this jumping animation, and once the character lands on the ground, a different pose should go into effect. But sometimes, the character remains in a jumping animation for a few seconds after landing on the ground. Sometimes when the character is running, instead of walking, the animation continues walking for a few seconds when it should be running, etc. This happens quite frequently.
There is also issues with transitions. The game doesn’t do proper transitions from cutscenes to loading screens, to gameplay. The game just abruptly cuts from a cutscene to a loading screen without a proper transition. It was a bit glaring at first but I got used to it.
There was one issue where I had a mission to race a turtle. This turtle beat me the first time, so I had to restart the mission. When I returned to him and pressed X to activate the mission again, it wouldn’t activate the mission. I had to leave the area and come back, and it worked again. Thankfully, there is an exit right next to this turtle race mission, so it wasn’t hard to leave and return back to him. This occurred on the level: “The Chimp, the Bag, and the Bunny”
Controls don’t feel as tight as they should. For example, when I tried to do a double jump, it feels like there were moments when the game didn’t register the double jump, and would instead do a single jump, even though I pressed the button twice. This wasn’t a huge issue, as the game isn’t that difficult, and I got used to this fairly quickly and adapted. It didn’t cause frustration as it would have on a more difficult experience. Nonetheless, it’s worth mentioning.
Some software errors did occur. One software error was really bizarre. I was closing out the game, and while the game was closing out, the switch displayed “closing software” for quite a bit of time and then there was a software error. This happened twice. On one other occasion, I tried to manually save the game, and the game had a software error. Thankfully, the game auto saves, and I didn’t lose any progress on any of the software errors I received.
As far as framerates, I had no issues. The game runs steady and locked at the same framerate throughout!
I played this mostly handheld on my OLED switch. No DRM.
