The Earl of Brittany and Richmond had lands here at the domesday survey.The Church, is a small ancient structure, and the benefice is a vicarage, valued in K.B. at £4. 7s. IId., and consolidated with the perpetual curacy of Rumburgh, in the patronage of the Rev. Lomb Atthill, of Halesworth. Wm. Adair, Esq., is lord the manor, but part of the soil belongs to the Harry, Johnson, and other families. The church and poor have had from an early period 2A. 1R. of land, now let for £3 a year.

SOUTH ELMHAM ST. MICHAEL is a small village, 4 miles south from Bungay and 4.5 south-east from Homersfield railway station. The church of St. Michael is a building of rubble and flint in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the church was reseated in 1904: there are 90 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, consolidated in 1805 with that of Rumburgh, joint net yearly value £75, with 66 acres of globe and residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late Rev. Percival Frost M.A, who was vicar 1868-77, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Linton Wilson M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, who is also rector of South Elmham All Saints-cum-St. Nicholas, where he resides. Sir R. S. Adair bart. DA, J.P. is lord of the manor, and the land is mostly owned by the farmers. The soil is loamy clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The poor's land consists of 4 acres. The area is 827 acres; the population in 1921 was 126.

South Elmham St Michael church (4 m. S. Of Bungay) has a good Norm. S. doorway; the rest is chiefly Dec. It contains a piscina and old painted pews. A modern sundial over the porch is inscribed: "Why stand gazing? Be about your business. N.O.W. I only court the sunlit hours." " N.O.W." is understood to stand for " Not only words."
