nimbleFunctions are the heart of programming in NIMBLE. In thischapter, we introduce simple nimbleFunctions that contain only onefunction to be executed, in either compiled or uncompiled form, but nosetup function or additional methods.

Notice that the actual NIMBLE code is written as an R functiondefinition that is passed to nimbleFunction as the runargument. Hence we call it the run code. run code iswritten in the NIMBLE language. This is similar to a narrow subset ofR with some additional features. Formally, we view it as a distinct languagethat encompasses what can be compiled from a nimbleFunction.

As in R (and nimbleFunctions), arguments are matched by order or by name(if given). Standard arguments to distribution functions in R(log, log.p, lower.tail) can be used and have the samedefaults. User-defined distributions for BUGS (Chapter12) can also be used fromnimbleFunctions.

A nimbleList is a data structure that can contain arbitrary other NIMBLE objects, including other nimbleLists.Like other NIMBLE types, nimbleLists are strongly typed: each nimbleList is created from a configuration thatdeclares what types of objects it will hold. nimbleLists are covered in Chapter 14.2.

Uncompiled nimbleFunctions pass arguments like R does, by copy. Ifx is passed as an argument to function foo, and foomodifies x internally, it is modifying its copy of x, notthe original x that was passed to it.

Compiled nimbleFunctions pass arguments to other compilednimbleFunctions by reference (or pointer). This is very different. Now if foo modifies x internally, it is modifying the samex that was passed to it. This allows much faster execution butis obviously a fundamentally different behavior.

If you have a function in your own compiled C or C++ code and an appropriate header file, you can generate a nimbleFunction that wraps access to that function, which can then be used in other nimbleFunctions. See help(nimbleExternalCall) for an example. This also contains an example of using an externally compiled function in the BUGS code of a model.

Sometimes one may want to combine R functions with compiled nimbleFunctions. Obviously a compiled nimbleFunction can be called from R. An R function with numeric inputs and output can be called from compiled nimbleFunctions. The call to the R function is wrapped in a nimbleFunction returned by nimbleRcall. See help(nimbleRcall) for an example, including an example of using the resulting function in the BUGS code of a model.

Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an Italian who writes in English; Jhumpa Lahiri, who has abandoned English for Italian; Ilan Stavans, a prominent translingual author and scholar; Hugo Hamilton, a writer who grew up torn among Irish, German, and English; Antonio Ruiz-Camacho, a Mexican who writes in English; and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a multilingual text.

The normal course of events is that a VSS Requester such as a backup tool like VEEAM makes the VSS call to back up a volume that houses an application (such as a Hyper-V VM, or SQL). The VSS writer for Hyper-V receives the request to flush and then pause write operations to the file system (for no more than 10 seconds). Once the flush is complete and during the pause write pause window the VSS requester then informs the VSS provider to create the snapshot. Once the VSS requester is informed that the snapshot has taken place, the VSS writer is told to release the hold on write operations and continue to operate normally. This process commonly takes 4-6 seconds, and cannot last longer than 10 seconds or else the process is aborted to prevent the application from every seeing degraded performance.

David, one of our most authoritative and nimble journalists, will become the new writer, host and anchor of The Morning, our rebranded flagship newsletter. Read more in this note from Dean, Joe and James.

Before joining Opinion in 2016, he created The Upshot, served as Washington bureau chief, was a magazine staff writer and won a Pulitzer Prize as a columnist for the Business section. He also led the team that produced the influential 2020 report advising the masthead on reorganizing the newsroom. He will anchor a new team that will work with him on The Morning, and he will report to Sam Dolnick and work closely with Adam Pasick and his newsletter team.

Delilah S. Dawson is the writer of the Blud series, the HIT series, Servants of the Storm, Wake of Vultures, and oodles of short stories and comics. This site includes links to her books, blog, events, and resources for writers.

Sometimes I imagine myself as the nimble writer who finds a way to write through every difficult event in their life. This version of myself would closet herself away in a disheveled, yet stylish, office decorated in the post cards from all of my fellow writer friends. I\u2019d use a pencil to tie up my hair in a messy bun and drink endless cups of herbal tea\u2014no caffeine for this writerly temple! Sometimes I dab crystal-like tears from my eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief and smile through the pain of small discomforts as my group chat cheers me on.

In one moment, I had erased months and months of progress. The new nimbleness I\u2019d felt in the summer seized up again, my skull shrinking around my brain. Memories, ideas, words come in fits and starts. Goals for writing, goals for living, abandoned. I\u2019ve sat in this very spot on the couch trying to type something, anything, but all I can think is, How can I write anything with a brain like mine?

Huneven, a journalist and James Beard Award-winning food critic, is a nimble writer. Her characters are the sort that haunt you weeks later. In fact, some of the book's other characters are more vividly drawn than Patsy herself: There's Gilles, the young lover of Patsy's ex-boyfriend, Brice, who looks after her post-prison and provides a glimpse into gay life at the dawn of the AIDS era; Cal, Patsy's husband, who copes with his own losses by helping heal others; and Joey, Brice's niece, who delivers the news that upends Patsy's carefully rebuilt life.

Interesting. I didn't know there were such apps. Though I'm not a writer, per se. I assume you've asked in writing forums? My GF writes, so she might be interested too. Please let us know what you find (if anything).

This book has been without question the most difficult challenge of my career. Two years is a lot of time for most writers, but for me it was a sprint that very nearly broke me. More than a few times, I considered abandoning the book altogether. But every time I got to that point, I thought of Sophie -- mending books in a city that no longer read stories -- and I knew I had to finish.

For those interested, I've got an interview running over at the Literary Asylum. The Literary Asylum is a fantastic children's book site run by screenwriter and author Matt Cunningham. Matt is an awesome guy and something of a Batman expert.[1. Lisa Yee used Matt as a Batman encyclopedia while writing her latest novel Warp Speed.] He and I talk about the differences between writing books and writing screenplays/comics. I also give up some of the back story about about how Peter Nimble came to be.

Being nimble enough to be able to recognize that if you put something in motion today, it will be outdated by the time you execute. You have to be quicker and more sensitive to how things are changing.

For a writer, one of the nicest aspects of winning a Newbery is that your book will always be available in bookstores alongside other Newbery winners, including such acknowledged classics as Dr. Dolittle and A Wrinkle in Time.

Ernst Lubitsch was probably the last German filmmaker to have the timing, wit and temperament for sophisticated romantic farce -- and he was born in 1892. And so it seems almost like a miracle that writer/director Sonke Wortmann's "Maybe . . . Maybe Not" comes close at all. ff782bc1db
