Dr. Nikolett Mus
Researcher in Samoyedic Linguistics
I am a senior research fellow at the Research Centre for Linguistics in Budapest, Hungary. My research focuses on the syntax of OV (verb-final) languages, with a particular emphasis on those spoken in Northern Siberia. I investigate their structural characteristics, the interplay between syntax and prosody, and Information Structure-driven variations, as well as the processes underlying syntactic change in these typologically distinct systems.
Beyond syntactic investigations, I am dedicated to developing NLP tools and constructing a linguistic corpus for Tundra Nenets (Samoyedic, Uralic), an endangered indigenous language spoken in Siberia. These efforts aim to support the language’s documentation and preservation.
My work also extends to developing data gathering methods for languages without standardised forms, such as Hungarian Sign Language, as well as for non-standardised varieties of languages, including the Csángó dialect of Hungarian (spoken in the Romanian region of Moldavia).
Through this website, I share my findings, publications, and ongoing research projects with the linguistic community. I invite you to explore the fascinating complexity of Siberia’s languages and engage in conversations about the broader implications of syntactic variation.
