This site contains a collection of projects I completed in GEOG 450. This class, named Visualizing Seattle, centered around a set of labs that helped us practice a variety of GIS and data science skills with Seattle as the subject of study. We completed four labs over our time in this course and each created a unique opportunity to examine "human experiences of space and place" within the city.
I have included the four labs in this portfolio. They can be accessed by clicking the three lines in the top left corner!
Located between Lake Washington and Puget Sound and sandwiched between two mountain ranges, the Olympics and the Cascades, the city of Seattle has a unique geography and its near-immediate proximity to nature lends itself to a unique set of human spatial experiences. Seattle developed quickly and continues to do so today, the most recent period of explosive growth in large part due to the ongoing tech boom, yet its culture persists and adapts as the people of the city shift demographically and use the spaces differently. Examining Seattle through a geographical lens offers a distinct perspective, providing us the opportunity to unravel the why of the where behind the location.
