Home Learning

This site is designed to be a quick resource for those of you who find yourself with some students at home who need some work to keep their education going. I intend to keep adding to it so feel free to keep tuning in to see what new stuff is available. Also, feel free to share the link with anybody and everybody and if you have some resources that you like, drop me an email and share them and I will post them here too. Also, if you have questions, feel free to email me as well. I have been a teacher for over 25 years, primarily in middle years with some high school (and lately primary phys ed...lol) experience.

My email address is saskrescue@hotmail.com

Scheduling:

The first piece of advice I have is for you to set up some type of daily schedule with your students. It just seems to work better and makes it more likely that work will occur. You don't have to be a slave to the schedule but it gives everyone something to hang their hat on. I have included my own children's schedules that they created with a little bit of guidance from us.

The direct link for the two schedules are here:

Saskatchewan Curriculum

A good place to start so that you can keep your individual student on track is the Saskatchewan Curriculum website. All provinces and states have their own. Just do a Google search for it and use it to guide your student with regards to content. For the Saskatchewan website, click on the grade level and choose the subject. When you get to that page, choose the online format for outcomes and indicators.

Math Drills

Any of you that know me as a teacher, know that I can't stand worksheets. That being said, this is an excellent site that goes through pretty much every mathematical concept for up to grade 8 and has a math worksheet so you don't have to figure out questions. I highly recommend it as a good starting point to keep your student working on math.

About Projects

There are lots of great things about doing project based learning as compared to other forms of learning, especially in a home schooling environment.

Flexible: Any individual project can work for ANY grade and ANY academic level. Grade 1 students can do the Impact essay just as grade 12 students can. You simply adjust the level of academic rigor and expectation. In fact, if you have multiple grades in your family, it would be kind of fun to see the varying levels of sophistication that arise.

Interest: Also, a good project allows the student to do what interests and engages them. With the impact essay, everyone is going to end up researching and writing a letter. What they write about and to who is completely up to them and should be about something that they care about.

Time: Projects also typically take time, just like the real world. It is not something that can be done in 1 hour. It something that takes a few days to a few weeks to work on and provides lots of opportunities for discussion in the family.

Integrated Subjects: Don't get too uptight about subject content. While it might not seem like there are many math or language arts projects listed, pretty much every single project involves reading, research, writing, speaking, math, etc. to varying degrees.

Impact Essay Letter Project

This is a pretty involved project that involves trying to make an impact or difference in the world by writing a research backed letter to a person who has the power to make decisions and actually mail it to them. The first file below describes the project in detail and has the criteria checklist and the other two files are templates and guides to writing a good essay. The key with this project is for the student to choose a topic that they actually care about and want to fight for. After all, your goal is to actually affect change by sending a well researched and thought out letter.

Real Game Simulation

This is a simulation that I have done with my students for years and many still talk about how it helped them understand what 'adulting' might mean. It is based on a simulation that available to teachers for years but I connected it more to the actual real world. The first file is the overall explanation and description of some of the mini life tasks that need to be accomplished before the 'adult' gets to start working on their monthly budget. Once you get into the full swing of things it provides a starting point for discussions around life's expenses and what it means to budget and live within your means. Once a student gets through everything, then it becomes a matter of doing the monthly budget more than once and having to look at what an increase in certain expenses would do to the budget.

Science Exploration

One of the best ways to learn something is to have to teach it to someone else. Either have them teach you as parents or have them do it for their other siblings and/or some other friends.

Build Your Own World Project

This one comes to you from Brad Watts, one of the teachers from the Let's Lead - Nikanetan program. It's a great project that integrates multiple subject areas together and lets the student's interests guide the outcome.
