NIHGL Walking Only at Needwood Today

I just got word from Needwood that they will be "walking only" today due to the amount of water that poured down from the skies.

The good news is that we are playing the front nine today! So we don't have to trudge up and down the mighty hills they have on the back nine over there.

If you cannot walk and are scheduled today, please let me know so that I can ask for rain checks.

Hi,

If you were scheduled to play at Needwood on July 12th, a rain credit will be posted to your account. League play was cancelled due to the heavy rain and lightning.

NIHGL New Change.... Falls Road

It has come to my attention (twice) that hole #7 at Falls Road was changed from a par 4 to a short par 3 for a period of time. While this is the case, please move any strokes given on that hole over to hole #8. In fact, treat that hole as a handicap 18, so that it's a last resort for giving any strokes.

If there are questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. This is a new situation to all of us, so we will do the best we can here.

Today's Round June 7th - Update

I heard from one of our members who called the course that they will do a rain credit for those who don't play today. It looks like there's nothing after 5:30, so I still plan to go out there (we can just delay tee times for those scheduled 4:30 or later.)

So if you decide not to play today let me know and I will work with the course to get you a credit.

NIHGL News & Important Reminders...

Hi to all fellow golfers,

First I want to say that this NIHGL season is off to a great start! There seems to be spirited competition (judging by the angry swearing and self-abuse I hear out there!)

We have a number of "newbies" this year too - I have met most of our new members, and they seem to be OK playing with a bunch of weird scientists and doctors...and me. If they weren't scared away in April they are showing great tolerance and very bad judgement! (But seriously, we are thrilled to have such a popular league.)

Important Reminders:

Rain Checks:

If the league decides to play (regardless of the weather) anyone scheduled to play that day is responsible for their round. If you cannot (or choose not) to play on a given day you need to get a sub if possible. So if you are in the A or B Flight please email your team to see if anyone can sub for you. If nobody on your own team can take your spot, then you can email the entire flight to see if someone wants to play a practice round.

Elaine and I will continue to make what we think are logical decisions on playing through weather. If we decide not to play as a league, then that means we've talked to our courses and people will get rain credit for that day. You must use your credit for a future round at the same course where you received it.

Extra Holes:

We are a 9-hole league folks. What that means is that once you finish your 9th hole you come into the clubhouse and brag about "that great shot" to all of your friends and colleagues. It does NOT mean that you recruit others to play more holes.

I have been asked about this many times this year, and here is some sound reasoning for you; the courses don't expect people to be out there and plan stuff like spraying chemicals and watering the greens, etc. Also, Falls Road uses the back nine for instruction and doesn't expect us to be out there. Our courses give us a group of tee times together a month in advance (the public can't do this.) They also let us have a say in playing in bad weather. I feel they have been very fair to us in not asking us to play in downpours or steady rain. So please understand that they do not want us to "make the turn" after 9 grueling holes with Kelly Prevost! (Sorry Kelly; I kid because I love.)

Outside Alcohol:

It has come to my attention that some of us are bringing copious amounts of their own hooch (alcohol) to the course. While this is much more economical, and I understand the urge, let's NOT do this. It's against the Montgomery County law...and it's just bad manners! We all enjoy drowning a few sorrows after our rounds - golf is hard. But please obey the rules of our two courses.

Pace of Play:

While this hasn't been a big issue this year (yay!) we all have to remember to keep up with the group in front of you. Don't look behind you - look in front of you. If there's an open hole (where you can't see anyone on the hole in front of you,) it means you need to speed up. Two tips to playing fast that may not seem obvious: 1) everyone watch every tee shot - don't hit your shot and then check your cell phone for messages. The more eyes on the shots, the better chance to find golf balls quickly. 2) Line putts up WHILE others are putting - don't wait till it's your turn to walk around and line your putt up!

Most Important - HAVE FUN! I enjoy all of our members and love playing a round of golf with you people. Our league has been going for many years, and I have never failed to enjoy a round out there. I hope you feel the same.

NIHGL Yesterday...

If you did not play at Falls Road yesterday (May 12) you can just ignore this email.

For those of you who played yesterday, please let me know if you were unable to complete your round due to rain. I've heard from 2 groups so far (Gottschalk and Freeman,) so if you played with them you don't need to send me anything.

The other groups need to let me know if a rain check is "in play".
