Night Falls ~ Evening Star
Touhou Antinomy of Common Flowers: Yukari Yakumo's 1st theme
Composed by ZUN, Arranged by ELEMENTAS (A-One)
Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers is the 15.5th official installment of the Touhou Project, released January 5th, 2018 on Steam. The game has 58 tracks, 2 of which are Yukari Yakumo's themes.
"Night Falls ~ Evening Star" is Yukari's first theme from AoCF. This version is an arrangement of an early version from Touhou 7.5: Immaterial and Missing Power.
"Night Falls ~ Evening Star" is Yukari Yakumo's theme from Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers. Originally from IaMP, this arrangement does not include the chromatic prelude and has a significantly faster tempo (~30bpm faster). This particular version, for the most parts, retains the melody from the original.
The song has a binary structure (ABAB). However, if one considers the final recapitulation of the B theme as a coda (given it is transposed up a semitone), then the structure would instead be ternary (ABAC).
The first theme of the song (A) contains elements of Russian hardbass (хардбасс) and utilises much syncopation and chromaticism. The usage of synthesisers and drums is evident. On the other hand, the second theme of the song (B) has an ascending chord progression, and uses winds and strings for an airy effect. Apart from a "Truck Driver's Gear Change" modulation in the final iteration of the B theme, the song stays in C# minor without any modulation.
I had planned for this arrangement since March of 2023, and finally completed it after a year and a half. While there weren't many transcriptions of this particular version, of the song, there were plenty of those for the IaMP version which were immensely helpful. This arrangement only took me about 2 hours due to its length and simplicity.
This is one of my least technically challenging arrangements. The lack of dynamic markings is intentional - the section building up to the B' theme naturally achieves a crescendo effect due to the increasing chord density. And while I'm not especially proud of this arrangement, I'm happy to say that it syncs perfectly with the actual song if timed correctly.
