Methods:  The top 10, by circulation, newspapers in Nigeria were selected and searched using the LexisNexis database for articles covering corruption in the health sector over a 2-year period (2016-2018). Two newspapers are not included in the database and were searched manually. 135 articles were identified and subject to content and framing analyses.

Conclusion:  This study highlights the potential role of media analyses in helping to understand how newspapers cover corruption in the health sector in Nigeria. It argues that the media has the potential to act as an agent of change for tackling corruption within the health sector.

Methods:  The nature and extent of media coverage about Ebola in four major national newspapers were examined. The four major national newspapers were The Sun, The Vanguard, The Nation and The Punch newspapers. The period of study ranged from 20 July (when the index case came to Nigeria) to 20 October 2014. Analysis of the newspaper article was according to content.

Archiving work began in December 2020 and plans include an open, digital platform to access the newspapers if the initiative can secure the necessary access to funding, materials, and resources. I spoke to Lawal to learn more about the project.

Almost every Nigerian library has old Nigerian newspapers. An aspect of the constitution that we inherited from the British means English-language newspapers are required to send a copy to libraries. Some have been lost, some are in the most deplorable conditions, but of all the archives I have been to, I never found a librarian that was not invested in their job. A lot of the problems are high-level stuff that goes beyond them.

A. Nigeria became independent in 1960 and my working theory is that by the late 2000s Nigerian newspapers were beginning to come online. This period will show how we have evolved since we became a country. The archives from before 1960 are just sparingly available. They're mostly falling apart and so hard to find.

A. There's an assumption in Nigeria that we do not keep anything, that you can't find anything from our past. But we searched and found newspapers from every day in this period across three libraries [the National Libraries in Sokoto, Abuja and Lagos] just before the pandemic started. We know where they all are.

On January 4, 2019, Nigerian newspapers considered the appointment of Amina Zakari by the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the February 16th, 2019 general elections worthy of being reported as the main story. Five national dailies prioritised the issue by reporting various views from the opposition party and civil societies. Nigerians reacted to the issue through official Facebook page of The Premium Times, The Punch, The Nation, The Guardian and Vanguard. The newspapers differed in their headline approach.

The newspapers were found to be intellectual in their headlines, expecting profound and strong positive emotional reactions from those Nigerians who are knowledgeable about the incident. Analysis shows that Nigerians are sad and annoyed about the incident. They were also discovered to be logical and surprised in their reactions with certain level of confidence.

Some Newspapers depend heavily on advertisements that may be placed by companies owned by powerful people. In some cases, this makes the papers cautious in reporting details of crimes or suspected crimes, and sometimes they carry articles that paint clearly corrupt individuals in a favourable light.[4] An analysis of newspapers shows a strong bias towards coverage of males, reflecting prevalent cultural biases. Few articles discuss women and there are few photographs of women outside the fashion sections.[5]Although earnings have declined since the late 1980s the number of publications has steadily grown.[6]

Online newspapers have become popular since the rise of internet accessibility in Nigeria; more than ten percent of the top fifty websites in the country are devoted to online newspapers. Due to improved mobile penetration and the growth of smartphones, Nigerians have begun to rely on the internet for news. Online newspapers have also been able to bypass government restrictions because content can be shared without the need for any physical infrastructure. The result has been a disruption of the traditional sources of news which have dominated the media industry. Recent online newspapers include Sahara Reporters, Ripples Nigeria, and Premium Times.[7]

The history of Islam in part of what is known today as Nigeria dates

to about the loth Century. Christianity dates to the late 18th Century. By

the middle of the 19th Century, when Nigerian newspapers began to appear

on the streets of Nigeria, both religions had won so many followers and extended

to so many places in Nigeria that very few areas were untouched by

their influence. The impact of both religions on their adherents not only determined

their spiritual life, but influenced their social and political lives as

well. It therefore became inevitable that both religions receive coverage from

most of the newspapers of the time. How the newspapers as media of information

and communication reported issues about the two religions is the

theme of this paper.

Rationale for the Study

The purpose of this study is to highlight the context in which such early

newspapers operated and the factors that dictated their performance. This

is because it is assumed that when a society faces external threat to its territory,

culture, and independence, all hands (the press inclusive) ought to

be on deck to resist the threat with all might. Were newspapers used as verbal

artillery and how did they present each religion? It is also assumed that

in a multireligious society a true press should be objective and serve as a

vanguard in the promotion of the interest of the people in general and not

create or foster an atmosphere of religious conflict. The study also aims at

finding out whether the papers promoted intellectual honesty and fostered

the spirit of unity particularly when the society was faced with the encroachment

of the British who posed a threat to their freedom, culture, economy ...

This study was guided by the functionalist theory which emphasises that the media help to co-ordinate various parts of the society by gathering and disseminating valuable information. It examined how book publishers used the newspaper medium to promote their books by content analyzing 164 entries on book promotion in three national newspapers for a four-year period between 2010 and 2013. The newspapers are The Guardian, The Punch and The Nation. Observable patterns in the promotional efforts of the publishers indicate a high propensity towards the use of photographs and illustrations with a percentage rate of 37% and 27% respectively. The Nation had a leading position of 45%, while The Guardian and The Punch followed with 33% and 22% respectively. Further findings in the study revealed that product adverts (5%) and corporate adverts (4%) that can position a book and the publishers in the marketplace were the least explored areas. The study therefore, recommends that publishers should see the need to vigorously use the newspaper to embark on both product and corporate adverts. This has the potential of motivating people to buy and read books especially if they are effectively and consistently placed in the newspapers.

Ethical considerations are important for journalists when reporting about the sexual abuse of children. The codes of ethics of society of professional journalists and Nigeria Press Council both recognize the need for ethics when reporting abuse stories due to the sensitive nature of the subject in relation to children and minors. This paper is hinged on the social responsibility theory of the press which states that granted the media may is free to publish especially in democracies, they must, however, exercise some restraint and responsibility in the type of information they make public. Using a qualitative content analysis, 10 newspaper articles were content analyzed, 5 each from Premium Times and Vanguard newspapers between September 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018 to ascertain their level of compliance with the ethics code. The study found out that although the newspapers did not disclose the names of abuse victims, it did however; include some information in some of the stories that makes it easy for the accused to be identified. Journalists are therefore enjoined to observe the code of ethics strictly as the future lives of children could be affected.

This article analyses the changing public sphere in the 1950s from the perspective of Nigerian newspapers, such as the West African Pilot, the Nigerian Tribune, the Daily Service, the Akede Eko, and the Daily Times. Because a central feature of the public sphere was the self-fashioning of politicians and journalists, this article addresses different tenets of emerging postcolonial subjectivities. Journalists expressed a multitude of nationalist ideas, used commemoration to strengthen claims of representing the national interest, and drew on anticolonial support from abroad. In terms of methodology, the focus on photographs in newspapers and their relationships with captions and articles offers a new lens through which to view this multiplicity of historical processes in the burgeoning field of visual decolonization. e24fc04721
