Why do people go to therapy?
People may seek out therapy for different reasons. Some people begin therapy to address a specific set of problems that they wish to resolve. Others may not have a goal when they begin therapy, but wish to enhance their understanding of themselves and to improve their quality of life and the quality of their relationships.Â
What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy stems from the ideas developed in psychoanalysis. The theories that inform psychodynamic psychotherapy are diverse, but universally they hold primary the concept of the unconscious. When we cultivate a concept of the unconscious, we can start to become curious about the parts of ourselves that lie out of immediate awareness. This insight can provide relief to symptoms, and can also help us to enhance our agency over our personal choices.
What is a trauma informed approach?
Trauma can stem from a specific event or set of events that were overwhelming to us. Trauma is sometimes stored in the body and is expressed through our emotions, pain or tension within the body, memory problems or through disruptions in sleep and our ability to fully rest. We can also view trauma as any kind of experience or realization that disrupts our ordinary way of seeing the world. Trauma informed therapy helps people to make sense of their experiences and to gradually process it in a supportive and affirmative setting.
