Nic Jones is a social work student, child abuse prevention educator, and lifelong learner committed to helping build communities rooted in safety, holistic health, and human flourishing .
Since childhood, I have always had the desire and passion that all people were given the opportunity to flourish and were honored with dignity. While I may not have had the language to describe such desire, I often would care about the person who sat alone in the school lunchroom, the friend who came to church with bruises on her arm, the cashier who used every ounce of energy to force a smile while utterly depleted, and so on. My dad always said that I would "fight for the underdog", and the reality is, I have a passion for the beauty of humanity's capacity to flourish.
Years later, while trying to figure out what exactly I wanted to do in life during my undergraduate studies, I began honing my passion in local church ministry and in my studies through psychology and counseling. I began noticing a need especially within my faith community that special attention to mental health was a necessity because life had a way of showing me that people were truly hurting. I began learning theories and skills that has developed into a pursuit of a career that is grounded in supporting growth and well-being.
Today, I continue this journey of learning and development so that I may meet people where they are, honor the sacredness of their story, and provide the support that can gently guide others into a space of healing, hope, and growth.
Beginning in August 2026, I will be serving as a therapy intern at Still Waters Counseling and Education Center under the supervision of Kaylee Newton, LICSW-S. I am grateful for Still Waters and the ways in which they seek to serve the greater Birmingham, AL community.
After completing my BA in Psychology & Counseling from Leavell College, I began studying for my Master of Social Work from the University of North Alabama. Following graduation, I plan to pursue licensure as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and continue serving individuals and communities through therapeutic practice.

From Bystander to Upstander: Upstanding is key to protecting children from sexual abuse. What is Upstanding? It is prevention in action and involves you as a safe adult, being an upstander. An “upstander” is someone who chooses to act when they see warning signs, boundary violations, or moments where a child may be vulnerable. Intervening or taking preventative measures as an upstander can mean the difference between a child being sexually abused or being protected from abuse.
