Earth's Interior

Lesson Plan

Question to Start The Day

  • How many layers does the earth have and what are their names?

Answer: The earth is made up of three different layers: the crust, the mantle and the core. This is the outside layer of the earth and is made of solid rock, mostly basalt and granite.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will learn how these layers coexist.

  • What the different layer do for our planet.

  • Students will also know what each layer is composed of.

Class Experiment

  • Students will be asked to use their knowledge of the layers of the earth to create a detailed foldable that show each layer in the correct order.

How deep is Earth's crust?

At its most thick, the crust is about 40km (25 miles) deep. This is a thin layer when compared to the other layers of the Earth. The mantle is the thickest layer at about 2,885 km (1,790 miles), followed by the outer core at 2,270 km (1,400 miles), and then the inner core, which has a diameter of about 1,216 km (755 miles). Since children’s common experience is limited to the Earth’s crust, its size is often exaggerated in their thinking.
