My name is Nicholas Amodio, and I'm an aspiring animator that wants to learn what it takes to be part of a successful animation team in today’s competitive industry.
Animation has been a major influence on my creativity. Shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Adventure Time, and Regular Show were foundational to my sense of humor and my desire to become an animator. Courage the Cowardly Dog was particularly formative. The show’s ability to weave absurd humor with horror-inspired conten kept me watching episode after episode. I credit Courage with helping me cope with my childhood fear of the dark. Now, not only is the humor in my work based in part on John R. Dilworth’s humor, but I instinctively try to weave a similar contrasting balance of absurd humor with dramatic intensity in my own stories.
I began telling stories as a theater actor in school and community theater. I’ve had plenty of experience analyzing characters and understanding the narrative arc of a storyline, which shapes the way I approach character design and develop stories. When I’m designing characters for an animated project, I begin by exploring the character’s movement with my body. This helps me to visualize how I will draw their unique movement patterns. It also teaches me important information about my character’s personality and behaviors.
Many of my stories and characters reflect my quirky, but loving family. I’m from a proud, Italian American family that likes to share stories, gossip, and laugh. My characters are colorful, expressive, and always getting into trouble. I place my family-inspired characters into fantasy worlds to fully explore my wildest creative visions. I’m currently in the process of creating a whole universe of anthropomorphic cats, and their civilization is quite different from our human world. I’m always thinking outside the box.
I hope to begin adapting to the fast-pace of the professional world. I am eager to feel what it’s like to be part of a hard-working team and learn from the working professionals how I might one day be a creative asset to a team like that. My goal is to be a lead animator on a team developing new ideas for film, television, and streaming.
