BEHOLD THE MAN
A book by Robert McKewin
Robert McKewin was a bishop of the Independent Catholic Movement. Prior to his consecration to the episcopacy, he had been, for some thirty years, a priest of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
His experience and ministry were both far-reaching and eventful. In addition to his normal parochial duties, during the time he was Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in South St. Paul, he administered a care home in Minnesota; and during the course of his ministry he and his wife Patricia, also a bishop within the Independent Catholic Movement, fostered more than one hundred and fifty children. Bishop Robert and Bishop Patricia worked for a time in Ramallah in the Holy Land, where they served as teachers to Christian Arab children. In his later years, Robert conducted a blessed prison ministry, providing God’s Word and the transforming grace of the Eucharistic Sacrament to many.
Bishop Robert writes of his book:
‘It was more than twenty centuries from the time of Jesus' ministry in Galilee and Judea when I studied for Holy Orders. The Gospels told of Him, of His teaching, and of His ministry. They told of people who encountered Him. I wanted to know in depth how His life, teaching, work, Passion, and Resurrection affected those who came close to Him. I studied in St. George's College, Jerusalem and had access to their library as well as to the libraries of the Greek Orthodox monastery and the Armenian Community's library situated by St. James' Cathedral. In addition I sought and received much treasured information regarding oral tradition. Much of this I incorporated in the first person fiction I created. It helped me to know the land, its people of two thousand years ago, and it deepened my inner conviction. I chose to use my imagination building on Gospel accounts, in an effort to 'see' Him, and so began writing Behold the Man. Choosing two Apostles of the twelve, Andrew and Judas Iscariot, I wrote of their experiences: of Andrew as an evangelist telling of his experience walking with the Son of God, and of Judas writing entries in his journal while sitting with his back against the post that held his Master. The other two were Mary Magdalene, the first person to see the Risen Lord, and Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, the Judge who sentenced Jesus to death knowing Him to be innocent.
‘First published 1990 after nearly fifteen years of writing and rewriting, it has been used as a teaching tool. Many people have felt they attained a deeper understanding of the life of Jesus, and of the history of the time, through reading the book. Some people have told me their faith has been strengthened by it, and that they have begun to tell others of that faith.’
Behold the Man is available from Amazon as a paperback, and as an Amazon Kindle e-book.
