1986 Niatoi U.S. Naval Airspace Incident
In 1986, Niatoi experienced one of the most dramatic airspace violations in its modern history. During a period of Cold War tension, a U.S. Navy carrier group unexpectedly sailed directly toward Niatoi’s territorial waters, accompanied by a full escort of cruisers and destroyers. The move was widely interpreted by Niatoi’s defense ministry as a deliberate show of force.
Scramble Order
At the time, Niatoi’s frontline fighters were undergoing maintenance, leaving only a handful of aircraft available. When radar detected two American fighters approaching the edge of Niatoi’s airspace, the Air Force issued an emergency scramble.
Five MiG‑28s Niatoi’s light fighters were launched to intercept.
These aircraft were never intended to face heavy U.S. carrier‑borne fighters, but they were all Niatoi had in the air that day.
The Encounter
As the MiG‑28s closed in, they identified one of the American aircraft as a twin‑engine, variable‑sweep fighter a type Niatoi had never encountered before. The U.S. jets made several aggressive maneuvers, crossing into Niatoi’s restricted airspace.
Niatoi’s lead pilot issued multiple warnings.
The American fighter ignored them.
The Engagement
When the U.S. aircraft locked onto one of the MiG‑28s with its radar, Niatoi’s air defense command authorized defensive action.
A MiG‑28 fired a short‑range missile.
The missile struck the American fighter, sending it down over open water. The pilot ejected and was recovered by U.S. forces. The second American aircraft then engaged MiG-28 (Sarkans-1), Then another American F-14A (we call this one Divainis --> Eccentric/Unconventional ) was launched from the carrier, then 3 of the 6 MiG's (Sarkans-3, 4 and 5) passed by the original F-14a as then the original F-14A turned to follow Sarkans-3, 4 and 5 with 1 already being there as then the MiG-28 (Sarkans-1) took the shot on the original F-14A missing the shots with now MiG-28 (Sarkans-2) also got behind the original F-14A as then MiG-28 (Sarkans-2) got on the original F-14A's 6 o'clock as then the MiG-28 launched a missile the F-14A evaded the missile as it misfired with a steam lock as then Sarkans-6 got behind Divainis then Sarkans-3 passed over the Divainis accidently sending the Divainis into its jet wash as then we stopped attacks on all aircraft till we could guarantee Divainis was safe. However Divainis made a perfect recovery pulling off to gain speed as then turning back to attack Sarkans-2 on the original F-14A's 6
Divainis launched a sidewinder at Sarkans-2 having no chance to evade Sarkans-2's wing was sheard completely off. Now Sarkans-3 and 4 pass by Divainis as it then turns to cover its wingman instead of chasing Sarkans-3 and 4 it goes after Sarkans-5 who is still on the 6 of the original F-14A as Sarkans-5 fires bullets overshooting the original F-14A as Sarkans-3 and 4 pass by again desperate to get Divainis off Sarkans-5's tail as then Sarkans-6 gets behind the original F-14A again firing a missile as again it steam locks as then Divainis reengages forming up with the original F-14A as Sarkans-4 goes to get Divainis as Sarkans-3 is being chased by the original F-14A as then it fires a missile destroying Sarkans-3 as Sarkans-4 then goes cold blooded getting a shot on the original F-14A damaging it then Divainis gets behind Sarkans-4 as then Sarkans-4 hits the original F-14 with a few bullets as Divainis launches a missile at Sarkans-4 as Sarkans-4 outpulls it however Sarkans-4's fate is sealed as Divainis launches another missile while Sarkans-4 had no speed it hit Sarkans-4 directly, causing the entire plane to explode in a massive fireball. Sarkans-6 fires a shot at Divainis missing its mark Divainis slows down overshooting Sarkans-6 as it got missile lock with Sarkans-6 now Infront of Divainis it fired its last missile destroying Sarkans-6. 5 of the 6 piolets downed were recover with Sarkans-1 flying home as a hero.
The incident caused a brief diplomatic crisis, but both nations stepped back from escalation.

By 1986, Niatoi rolled out the first prototype of its new light fighter, a modification of the MiG-28 designated the MiG‑28A and utilizing some systems developed by Niatoi that helped improve it from the Soviet version. it was:
