STAE, Striving to Achieve Excellence, is an elective class at New Hanover High School. Students will learn skills in the "hidden curriculum"--study skills, test taking skills, note taking, time management, and organization. The STAE class, which is designed for students needing extra support, provides students with academic support, social support, career support, college support, and leadership development.
Additionally, students participate in academic collaborative support groups, participate in enrichment and motivational activities, visit colleges in North Carolina, and have guest speakers from the community in order to help students realize that college and future careers are attainable.
STAE's Mission
STAE will prepare students for the rigor of post-secondary education while increasing student achievement and developing overall success through empowerment.

Circumstances that may hinder student's path to college
Both parents and students are a huge part of the success of each and every STAE student. You, as a STAE student, are responsible for taking ownership for your learning, for striving to do your best in order to reach each of your goals, and to not only want to succeed but believe you can succeed. Although STAE can provide you with support, you must put forth 100% effort into everything you do. As a part of STAE, you are now a role model for others to follow.
As a parent, you are an integral part of STAE. We value your input, hope for your participation in support team meetings and family nights, and encourage helping and supporting your child at home. If you ever have questions or concerns, please contact your child's school as we are all advocates for your child's success and well-being!
