Các vùng sâu vùng xa trong Vietnam vẫn còn một số gia đình thuộc nhóm dân tộc thiểu số sống trong cảnh nghèo. Họ ở trong những ngôi nhà tạm bợ ghép bằng tre nứa, nhôm hoặc gỗ. Khi mưa, gió tạt nước vào nhà nên họ dùng các miếng bạt để chắn nước mưa. Trong nhà họ rất đơn giản, đôi khi chỉ có một chiếc giường. Họ còn dùng bếp củi và một số hộ lấy nước từ nguồn tự nhiên như ao, hồ, khe suối để sinh hoạt hàng ngày. Đa số làm nghề nông như cà phê, lúa, sắn mì. Xơdrăh và Bahnar là một trong những sắc tộc ở tỉnh Kon Tum và lân cận. Theo dân tộc Xơdrăh, tên nữ bắt đầu bằng E hoặc Y, còn tên nam thì bắt đầu bằng A. Ví dụ như: E Niu, Y Viễn, A Thiết. Còn dân tộc Bahnar thì đa số có tên họ Đinh. Họ có ngôn ngữ riêng nên đôi khi giao tiếp với họ hơi khó, nhất là với những người lớn tuổi. Thế hệ trẻ và những ai học cấp 1 trở lên thì nói được tiếng Việt phổ thông.

Chi phí xây dựng một ngôi nhà bê tông 6m x 6m với 2 phòng ngủ chỉ tốn mấy ngàn đô. Tuy nhiên đó là một số tiền nhỏ nhưng đối với họ, nhất là những gia đình trẻ, thì rất khó dành dụm được.

In the heart of Southeast Asia lies Vietnam, a country rich in culture and history but grappling with socioeconomic challenges. There are still a number of families in the minority groups living in poverty, often in makeshift homes that barely provide shelter. It was this pressing need that inspired my volunteer journey to build small houses for these families, transforming lives one home at a time.

My journey started in a rural area of Kon Tum province where the majority of the people are of the Xơdrăh and Bahnar ethnicities. Some of the most impoverished live in temporary structures constructed from flimsy materials such as woven bamboo. Due to the many gaps around the exterior walls, their homes barely stand against the rain and wind. Inside, the conditions are equally challenging; just a single bed with no other furniture in some cases. These families are trapped in a cycle of poverty with limited access to basic amenities and clean water. For some, a dirt floor is the only foundation they have. The need for safe, stable housing is urgent and essential for their well-being and future prospects.

It costs a few thousand dollars to build a 6m x 6m concrete house with 2 bedrooms. However, it's a significant amount that some of them never have. The cost of building this type of house may seem small to others but the impact is immeasurable. These structures provide not just physical shelter but also a foundation for stability and hope. They become places where families can sleep without worrying about wind and rain splashing on them and children can focus on their studies.
