The rundown

"Once I heard someone got rich by NFT'' is an economics themed board game revolving around the trading of Non-Fungible Tokens, or NFTs. The game is played with up to 4 players, each in the position of an investor aiming to make a fortune by navigating the tumultuous NFT market while steadily accelerating the devastating effects of climate change with each transaction. There are two core gameplay elements: trading and moving. During each turn, players buy or sell NFTs with the goal of accumulating wealth, and move around the game board filled with action tiles ranging from beneficial events to unforeseen scams. However, each transaction also exponentially accelerates the electric grid counter, periodically activating disaster events that greatly hinder players for several turns until the environmental impact destroys the NFT market, crowning the richest player as the winner.

Innovation

Our game is about NFT, and one of the coolest features of our game is the NFT trading market. Players not only could buy and sell NFTs, but they can also buy and collect a full set of collections to receive awards, and also the market price will change so players could have a chance of earning or losing money just like what’s happened in real life. It is a simple but complete trading market system.

Relevance

Our project is always trying to connect something that happened in our real life. NFT is relatively new stuff to our society. A lot of people fall into a scam before even knowing what NFT is, and we want to introduce NFTs to the player through this game, and let players know the negative impact of NFT. Players will experience the benefits (earning money, collections, etc.) and disadvantages (stolen NFT, environmental disaster, etc.) through this game. Players can experience a real-life in-game with different expenses and incomes.

Selling points

Our selling point is demonstrating the NFT market, not only the trading system but also the consequence of buying and selling NFTs. People should care about our game because the negative impact NFTs bring to society is related to everyone: The energy and resources used to run the trades; the scam and copyright issues of NFTs, etc. Player wants to play it to experience NFTs, especially for those who actually want to enter the real NFT market.

Game Walkthrough

Top level summary

“Once I heard someone got rich by NFT” is a simulation game in which four players compete against each other to become the richest through buying and selling NFTs. Each player roleplays as a person who recently began investing in NFTs. Players move around the board and encounter opportunities to buy or sell NFT at fluctuating prices, events that alter the market or surprise living expenses. While players are trying to maximize profits from dealing with NFTs, they must also be cautious of the negative environmental impact they are contributing to. Every transaction consumes an increasingly large amount of electricity. If the players exceed the electric grid capacity, major determinants for the players will occur.

Game mechanics

Our game is to demonstrate a person real-life with different kinds of expenses and income, combined with the features of the NFT market. The maximum player of our game is 4 people. There is an age limit of 15, since we recommend players shouldn't be too young to play the game to avoid misunderstanding the rules or gameplay. Of course, we always welcome players of all genders. One of the 4 players will also work as a part-time banker to help give out and receive payment for the bank. Players will start their game at the starting point with 50k cash in hand. There will be different boxes including "Risky", "NFT", "Event", "Sell" and "Expense" on the gaming board. Each box represents different actions and functions.

The player who starts the turn rolls the D-4 to decide the value of NFT of that whole round. After that, each player rolls the D-6 to decide how many steps they are going on the gaming board. Each time players roll the dice, the player can receive $10k cash as passive income. Players who pass the corner of the board will receive an additional 10K cash bonus. After everyone completes their movement of the turn, the player who starts the turn is going to roll the D-20 to decide how much power should increase to the Power Breaker. The player who starts the turn will pass the "turn marker" to the next player, and repeat the above steps. We always welcome players to think carefully before making any decision, then rushing the game.

Play matrix

Our game is a mixture of chance and skill with a little more chance than skill because our group wants to mimic how the NFT market works. It is difficult to purchase a high-value NFT for low, being able to sell aN NFT, and there are oftentimes buyers who get scammed. The physical dexterity compared to mental calculation is low since the game only requires players to move their pieces and money around. The mental calculation is on a higher scale as the players are required to use simple math to calculate the NFT prices if they land on a buy tile, when certain events happen, or NFT transactions.
