The School Site Council is hosting two meetings during the month of January. The first meeting took place on Thursday, January 7, and offered an opportunity for an overview of the FY’22 budget. In her presentation, Ms. Skerritt noted that BPS has made an investment district-wide to support students’ social-emotional health. For BLS, this commitment will result in the addition of three positions: two social workers and a family liaison. Changes to the weighted student funding formula that informs schools’ overall budget allocations, combined with contractual salary obligations, has resulted in a deficit of $30,000. This deficit will not impact personnel, and BLS is working with BPS to secure supplemental funds to close the gap.
In addition to a preliminary overview of the FY’22 budget, SSC representatives took a first look at a draft of the 2020-2021 Home-School Compact. This document serves as an agreement among faculty, students, and families that outlines the responsibilities of each group as we work in partnership to support students’ academic and personal growth and social-emotional well-being.
Future meetings
The upcoming SSC meeting on Tuesday, January 12, at 6:00 pm will allow for additional discussion related to the FY’22 budget and the 2020-2021 Home-School Compact before SSC representatives take a final vote on these items. In addition, time will be reserved at the meeting for a preliminary review of the 2020-2021 Title I Family and Student Engagement Plan. You can access the meeting through this link.
SSC meetings continue to be held virtually this year, and all families are welcome to attend.
Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, January 12, at 6:00 pm. Minutes from previous meetings can be found on the BLS website under the Families > Organizations tab, or more directly through this link. Please contact Kelly Chase (P’25) with any questions or suggestions for future SSC meetings.
January SPC Meeting
The first SPC meeting of 2021 will be geared towards Sixie parents and will feature a presentation from Ms. Christine Kelley, Program Director of Modern Languages. Ms. Kelley will discuss Modern Language selection, a binding commitment.
Tuesday, January 19, at 7:00 pm
Meeting ID: 851 7330 0023
Passcode: 775201
Here’s more info from Ms. Kelley about her presentation for Sixie families:
One of the most significant decisions for all current 7th graders at BLS is coming up soon: which modern language to study for the four year graduation requirement. BLS offers Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Students will receive a Google form to fill out by the end of January, ranking their choices in order of preference. The school will strive to follow students’ preferences when making assignments to available seats. The language choice will be a major, binding commitment for at least four years in grades 8-11 (adding another year in grade 12 is optional and depends on course availability).
The selection form, which must be submitted by Friday, February 5, should be carefully considered, as no changes can be accommodated after the deadline and undecided students will be randomly assigned to remaining open seats not necessarily in the language they want.
If you are unable to attend, the slides of the presentation will be emailed to the BLS Parents Forum, posted in the SPC folder, and additional resources will be available on the BLS website under the Modern Languages tab.
As students must commit to studying a language for four years, this is an important decision, and our goal is to provide as many resources as possible to help with the decision. Please contact Ms. Kelley if you have any questions.
December SPC Meeting
Our December SPC meeting featured an informative & engaging discussion about the college process at BLS with Ms. Michelle Cannon, Interim Director of the Schawbel Center. Slides from Michelle’s presentation are available here. You can also visit the Guidance Department's College Counseling page for additional resources.
Boston Chinese Lunar Year
Online Celebration
BLS Friends of Chinese Culture will be co-hosting a Chinese Lunar Year Online Celebration on Friday, February 12, at 7:00 pm via Zoom. For more information, click here for flyer!
Be a Parent Representative!
Two parent leadership seats remain unfilled following our October elections. Seats available are:
One Latinx School Parent Council Representative
One representative to citywide District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) for BLS
Parents interested in filling one of these roles should email the committee. Elections for interested candidates will be held at a future SPC meeting.
Virtual Praefects
Even though the physical doors of the Keefe Library aren’t open, Keefe librarians Ms. Ellis and Ms. Harari have managed to find enough work to provide volunteer hours for 37 virtual library praefects! Freed from their usual tasks of study hall attendance, book checkout, and shelving, these BLS students have been finding creative ways to meet teen patrons where they’re at: in the digital world. Our social media group has developed a multi-faceted campaign, employing student favorite Instagram (link here or search for keefe_library) but also branching out to Twitter (link here or search for Keefe Library, BLS) and Facebook (link here or search for Harry V. Keefe). Whichever platform you prefer, please follow us today for news about upcoming events, digital tips, and ideas on what to read next.
More ways to reach out to students and staff
Meanwhile, our library support team has been busy creating written handouts to go with our many instructional videos. These can help teachers and students with various learning styles. Our trivia group held its first tournament for Sixies and Bsies on BLS history and is planning a second event soon (check our social media or the Daily Bulletin for dates). Our movie group held a remote social gathering to swap film talk and recommend holiday favorites. Looking for something good to read? Check out the praefects’ review blog, Wolfpack Reads, along with Ms. Harari’s blog, Outside of a Dog. Sign up to follow both and you’ll get reviews delivered right to your inbox! If you have a seventh grader who loves graphic novels, have them email Ms. Harari to join the Keefe Library book group, which will meet every other week after school and be led by a BLS senior. If you have a library praefect in your family, find out what they’re working on and pass along a hearty thanks from the entire BLS community!

Happy New Year!
The BLSA Parents’ Committee wishes everyone a Happy New Year and thanks all of those who supported the BLSA in 2020. Making a donation only takes a few minutes but benefits our kids all year long. Here are a couple of vlog episodes showing the impact the BLSA is making on the lives of two students during this very challenging year:
Continue the Journey with these two BLS Students:
Every dollar contributed counts, as does the message of support from as many parents as possible. Whether it is $5 or $5,000, if you can make a gift in any amount to support our students, faculty, programs, and opportunities, you will help this community thrive.
Stay tuned for remote opportunities to stay connected to fellow parents in the coming months. We look forward to a great 2021.
Multicultural Potluck: Thank you!
Thank you to all those who helped plan, facilitate and attend the virtual Multicultural Potluck on December 19, 2020. It was a wonderful evening of shared recipes and cultural experiences ending with a collective dance experience led by our own FEqD DJ!

P2P met on Thursday, December 17, and discussed the challenges of motivating students during remote learning. At our meeting we talked about student engagement. We’ve heard from many families that they are concerned about their students.
Here is an excerpt of a message sent to P2P:
My daughter is struggling big time. She’s always been a very conscientious student. With this remote model it’s like she is just slipping away. She did really well the first term. But this current term has just been a mess. I am trying hard to control my hovering. I just don’t want her to fall so far behind that she can’t catch up.
At our meeting there were a few suggestions:
Feedback on workload: Parents encouraged their students to speak up when the workload is too much - when assignments are taking longer than 30 minutes per subject per day (45 minutes for AP classes). P2P encourages teachers to check in with their students to make sure they are able to complete the work assigned. This has been very challenging for AP classes - the College Board is not offering any accommodations this year and all material that would have traditionally been on the tests will be included this year (unlike last year when the tests were modified to include only material covered through March 2020).
Office hours: P2P encourages ANY student to reach out to their teacher during office hours if they are falling behind or need help. We know that students hesitate to go to office hours. Parents can help their students practice what to say or how to ask for help - this is an important skill that will help their students throughout their high school and college years. P2P developed this Guide to help families address issues in a productive, helpful manner. Concerned parents can also reach out to teachers via email - their contact information can be found here.
Due dates: Some subjects allow students partial credit for turning in work late. P2P encourages all students to ask for an extension if an assignment is not complete. Several examples of teachers working with students were shared at the meeting.
Timely feedback: Parents are encouraged to check grades on SIS with your student. Some teachers don’t post grades until progress reports, but others post much more frequently. If your student doesn’t know how they are doing in a class they can meet with their teacher to request feedback.
P2P Meeting notes can be found here. The next Parent 2 Parent meeting will be Wednesday, January 27, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm.
For those new to BLS, Parent 2 Parent is a subcommittee of the Parent Council. The group’s purpose is primarily to provide assistance regarding individual student needs, increase SPC understanding of general parent concerns and act as a liaison with school administrators regarding these issues, and to create a sense of community among parents. The full document describing P2P is here.
If you would like to join the P2P Google Group please begin by filling out this form. The link for the Zoom meeting will only be emailed to the P2P list. Parents’ suggestions for topics to be addressed are welcome. Please send us an email with any questions or suggestions.

December Meeting Recap: Transition Services
At our meeting held on Wednesday, December 16, we were joined by Anita Davis-Thompson from Work Inc., the transition provider for BLS. Work Inc. helps high school seniors refine their focus on interests so they know what directions to take, and follows Universal Design principles and practices to accommodate the needs of each student. Ms. Davis-Thompson's presentation included an overview of support services including workplace readiness, self-advocacy, and job exploration guidance. She also discussed transition services and provided resources available through this link. Applications for support can be started at workinc.org.
Assistant Head of School Mr. Steven Chen, who joined the BLS staff this year, explained that transition services included two main categories: college transition with counselors, and connecting students with disability resources where they plan to go. Transition planning should start when the students are 14 and should be part of the IEP process, including development of transition goals.
Upcoming January Meeting
To help ease back to regular routines after the holidays, our January meeting will be somewhat informal. We can discuss potential topics for upcoming meetings, as well as our BLS Handbook project, and anything else folks would like to talk about. Please join us on Inauguration Day, Wednesday, January 20, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, via this Google Meet link.
Call for Volunteers
I would like to thank Katrina Norman, who created FoAx last year, and her husband, Eric, for their invaluable contributions to this group. However, they made the decision that their son will not return to BLS after the winter break, so FoAx will no longer be benefiting from their knowledge and support. Therefore, I need a co-chair! If anyone is interested in becoming more involved in FoAx, please let me know.
Christine Wilder, Chair, P’22
Student teacher Mr. Joseph Liani
Originally from Beverly MA, Mr. Joe Liani is a graduate student at UMass Lowell pursuing Music Education. He is primarily a guitarist but also proficient on bass. A few fun facts about Mr. Liani: he toured the northeast United States in a band, he worked at the Beverly YMCA summer camp as both as a music specialist and outside of music, and he's the head baker at his father’s business, Coffee Time Bake Shop in Salem, MA. At BLS he will be working mainly with Ms. McKenna but also with Ms. George, Mr. Grammer, Mr. Snyder, and Mr. Blackett. “Before my student teaching experience even began,” he says “I felt very welcomed from everyone at BLS. I am very grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to learn from all the staff and students.”
We’ll introduce you to more of our student teachers in future issues!
The concert will feature all of our string groups, the Wolfettes, Wolftones, visual art, and more. Please be aware that If you already registered for Part I of the Showcase, you will automatically receive a link to Part II - but if you did not register, you will need to click on the link below to RSVP and receive the link. Admission to the Showcase is free but we respectfully request that guests consider making a donation to Friends of the Arts in support of our brilliant student artists and musicians, and to help cover the production costs. Congratulations to Spanish students from BLS who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2020 National Spanish Examination! Only 249 students were able to participate prior to school closing in March 2020, with 115 scoring above the 50th percentile and 49 earning medals: 2 gold (95th percentile and above), 21 silver (85th-94th percentile), 26 bronze (75th-84th percentile), and 66 honorable mentions (50th-74th percentile).
“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 140,000 students participating in 2020.” The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. For more information about the exam, visit this site.
Students from BLS have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers Ms. Perry de la Rosa in levels 3 and AP Spanish Language, Ms. Williams in levels 2 and 4, and Ms. Kelley in AP Spanish Literature.
Gracias to the BLSA for supporting our students and making it possible financially for them to participate. Apologies for the lateness of this news as the results were delayed due to the pandemic.
Plans are underway for students who want to participate in the 2021 exam in March. Medals and certificates will be held for the 2020 winners until we are back in school in person.
