10.21.2021 NewCal Newtonville
The newest image from the city on the right is just a prettified version of the white image released in October, 2021.
Note that it is marked “DRAFT” so we don't know what it will look like in the end.
While we need improved internal space to meet our senior's needs, we must keep the historic character of the outside intact, not demolish it, as has recently been proposed.
The “new build” proposal would still have the following flaws:
The charming and historic brick and mortar exterior would be demolished
The park area in front of the building, unique to Walnut St., is eliminated
The mass of the building is out of scale with other buildings on Walnut St., does not fit the streetscape, has virtually no setbacks, and is out of proportion with the size of the parcel
The 31 parking spaces that are planned will be woefully inadequate
Our petition asks the Mayor, City Council, and Historic Commission to please preserve the exterior of the current building AND build a Senior Center we can all be proud of. We can do both!
