Purpose

The Music Department, like the school, is growing rapidly. It has grown from only a few learners taking instrumental lessons in school to over 200 and from one classroom teacher and one instrumental teacher to two

classroom teachers and ten instrumental teachers.

As a new department we are all trying to establish an ethos that is fun, caring and inclusive, as well as challenging and hard working. One of our main priorities in the next couple of years is to increase the number of musical ensembles and expand the number of members attending them.

Nexus Music Department Instrumental Lessons

The department offer both individual and group lessons; (group lessons normally have 2 learners with a maximum of 3).  Lessons normally take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that the learners do not miss the same class lesson more than once a term.  Year 10 to 13 learners will have their lessons outside of school time.

Where possible, it is expected that all those participating in the programme will attend at least one of the music ensembles offered as part of the CCA & ECA programme.  It is also hoped that most will be able to take part in at least one of the recitals/concerts which are scheduled during the year.

We also offer Trinity Guildhall and Associated Board for the Royal School of Music examinations throughout the year. Whilst there is no requirement of the programme for students to take these exams, we do recommend them as they are rewarding, and a student feels they have goals to aim for on their instrument. Details for these exams will be posted on the music centre notice board. As of 2010 Trinity and ABRSM exams from Grade 6-8 will count towards UCAS (University Entrance) points – these are additional to the ‘A’ level and IBDP point scores.
