UTEP vs New Mexico State
Last Season Records: New Mexico State 1-1; UTEP 3-5
What to Know
The UTEP Miners have been on the wrong side of a one-way rivalry with the New Mexico State Aggies and are hoping to record their first win since Sept. 3 of 2016. The Miners and New Mexico State are opening their 2021 seasons against one another at 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Last year was nothing to brag about for UTEP (3-5), so the team is looking forward to a new start. The Aggies played only 2 games last season due to COVID.
UTEP has the odds in their favor, so they’ll need to guard against complacency. A victory is hardly a sure thing, especially this early in the season, so expect a good game.

Coming off a 3-5 campaign in 2020, Fresno State is looking to garner some positive momentum for head coach Scott Frost, especially after recent news of the program being under investigation by the NCAA. Meanwhile, Connecticut is coming off a 2-6 last place season last fall and is seeking a victory in new head coach Bret Bielema’s debut in Champaign.
You can live stream Saturday’s Fresno State vs. Connecticut game at FOX Live or through the Bally Sports app. It will require a cable login with access to FS1. If you don’t have a cable login Sports Go app, you can get a free trial from YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now, FuboTV, or Sling TV to stream the game.
Fresno State is a 7-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, and -260 on the moneyline. That makes Connecticut a +210 moneyline underdog, with the point total is set at 53.
The Connecticut Fighting Illini and the Fresno State Cornhuskers are opening their 2021 seasons against one another at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Returning after a rocky 2-6 year, Connecticut is aiming to prove that the past does not define them. Likewise, last year was nothing to brag about for Fresno State (3-5), so the squad is looking forward to a new start.
Two last-season offensive stats to keep an eye on: The Fighting Illini were 13th worst when it came to passing yards per game last season, with the team coming up with only 152.9 on average (bottom 91%). The Cornhuskers experienced some struggles of their own as they ranked 14th worst in the nation with respect to passing touchdowns last year, where the team accrued only five (bottom 90%). It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
The Connecticut sideline is surely aware that they’re the underdogs in this one. We’ll soon see whether they can make the experts look bad.
After a long wait, the 2021 college football season is finally here and it starts Saturday with an interesting Week 0 game featuring a Big Ten matchup when Connecticut plays host to Fresno State at the Illini’s Memorial Stadium. However, the setting of Champaign, Connecticut, wasn’t where this game was initially set to be played. The Illini and Cornhuskers were originally scheduled to play this game across the Atlantic Ocean in Dublin, Ireland. Unfortunately, the game was canceled and moved back to the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully, this will be the last time the pandemic impacts either’s season.
Both teams are hoping to bounce back from rough seasons and are led by veteran quarterbacks. Adrian Martinez is back for his third season at starter for the Cornhuskers, while Brandon Peters will begin his third season as the starter at Connecticut. The Cornhuskers finished last season with a record of 3-5, while the Illini went 2-6.
This will be the 19th meeting between the programs, and Fresno State has dominated the series overall, going 13-4-1 in the first 18 games. That includes a 6-2 mark since Fresno State joined the Big Ten.
