Mishti Kumra is a Bengali variety of sweet pumpkin. It grows abundant edible vines and several large pumpkins per plant. It has sweet orange flesh and can keep for months in a cool, dry space. It's great in soups and curries.
Harvest mishti kumra in autumn, when the pumpkin is big, heavy, and has a hollow sound when tapped. Mishti Kumra should be harvested when between 1ft and 1.5ft in diameter. A mature mishti kumra can feed many people.
Kumra leaves and vines can also be harvested and eaten. Harvest new growth, not more than 3 feet from the growing end of a new vine. Cut with scissors or a knife. Don't cut a vine if there are kumra fruit growing on it.
Kumra flowers can also be harvested and eaten, like other squash flowers. Pick off male flowers (ones that don't have little round baby pumpkins at their base. It's better to harvest the flowers in the morning before they've closed in the heat, and before insects have started pollinating. Don't harvest all the flowers on the plant! Without any male flowers, pollination won't happen and the plant won't produce healthy pumpkins.
To save space in a small garden, it's best to trellis the kumra. This means building a structure for the vines to climb up, taking up more vertical space than horizontal space. Squash trellises can also double as shade structures for plants and people that like the shade.
