GRAD5134: Interdisciplinary Study: Principles of Disaster Risk Management
This course utilizes a scenario- and case-history-based learning approach and features a capstone team project to mimic the way interdisciplinary teams have to collaborate in the real world. Students will generate improved understanding of the dynamic interplay between the key social and cultural impacts that social science students recognize and the basic risk analysis skills that those in the hard sciences understand. Students will learn about interdisciplinary approaches to disaster risk management, including the various theoretical underpinnings, and will draw from guest speaker lectures and case histories.
UAP5214: Disaster Resilience and Hazards Mitigation Planning
This course introduces students to the concepts, theory, and planning tools of disaster resilience and hazard mitigation planning, with a focus on floods and coastal zone management. The course covers topics ranging from risk and vulnerability assessment, impact analysis, risk communication and perception, disaster resilience indicators, hazards mitigation strategies at all scales – regional, community, neighborhood, and structure.
UAP5224: Planning Methods and Technologies
UAP5224 is a core course of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) Program. This course equips students with data acquisition, data cleaning, and fundamental data analysis skills required for urban planning practices. It also lays a firm foundation upon which to build an understanding of more complex datasets and analysis strategies that are critical for the successful researcher in urban and regional planning.
UAP5494: Advanced Quantitative Techniques in Planning Research
UAP5494 is a core method requirement for the Doctoral Program in Planning, Globalization and Governance (PGG). This class introduces advanced quantitative methodology for conducting urban and regional research. Given the inherently spatial and temporal nature of most urban problems, this course offers graduate students who are focusing on research careers with hands on experiences in multiple regression and categorical variable estimation, inferences, and diagnosis. The course also briefly discusses longitudinal data analysis and spatial statistics and spatial regression.
UAP5114: Computational Applications in Planning
This course introduces students to the commonly used computational techniques in urban planning practices and research using Geographic Information System (GIS). Topics include concepts, principles and tools of GIS, geographic information science, spatial data structure and the relational database, spatial analysis, data visualization, and participatory GIS. While discussing these topics, the course focuses on their applications in urban planning applications and urban problem solving.
