Professional Reading Project for works by emerging Northern Ontario composer. This two-day event will take place December 16 and 17, 2012 and will involve 6 professional musicians and about an equal number of emerging composers with their brand new compositions. Reading sessions and a final showcase of works are free and open to the public. May Day Concert will feature a number of Thunder Bay performers to celebrate New music North's eleven years in operation. Highlight of the concert will be the premiere of Three Levels of Existence (2012) for amplified piano, CD and visuals by Darlene Chepil Reid. This piece was commissioned through a Northern Arts Program of the Ontario Arts Council grant and will be premiered by Thunder Bay's own, pianist Derek Oger. Catherine Jillings will perform the premiere of Red Moon for solo viola by Aris Carastathis.

Diana McIntosh, composer, pianist, performance artist, March 8, 2012, Jean McNulty Recital Hall, William H. Buset Centre for Music and Visual Arts, Lakehead University. Will be joined by Jean-Francois Breton and Anthony Bacon in a concert of music for piano, extended vocal technique, percussion, cello and live electronics.

Renown Canadian accordionist Joseph Petric will present a concert of New Music for accordion on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall. On selected works, he will be joined by Thunder Bay's own Colleen Kennedy, oboe, Jean-Francois Breton, marimba and Anthony Bacon, cello. The concert will include music for accordion and electronics.

Tamarack Woodwind Quintet will close the tenth Anniversary Season with a concert on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 8:00 pm in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall. Members of the quintet are: Doris Dungan, flute; Erin Brophey, oboe; E-Chen Hsu, clarinet; Karine Breton, bassoon; Damian Rivers-Moore, horn

Montréal based ensemble Trio Fibonacci will perform on Tuesday April 19, 2011 at 8:00 pm in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall. The concert will feature the premiere performance of a new work by Darlene Chepil Reid composed especially for Trio Fibonacci.

Visiting scholar Dr. Athanasios Zervas will give a saxophone lecture-recital on Friday, February 11 at 8:00 pm in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall. Dr. Zervas is a professor of composition and saxophone at the University of Macedonia, Greece. The event is sponsored by the Lakehead University Department of Music. Admission is FREE and everyone is welcome.

 Don't miss Sbot N Wo a duo performing new music for voice and live electronics on January 14, 2011 at the Jean McNulty Recital Hall, at 8:00 pm The first concert in the 2010-11 season will take place on October 13, 2010 featuring the Ensemble Mujirushi at the Jean McNulty Recital Hall, Lakehead University. The next New Music North concert will be on Wednesday May 5, 2010 at the Jean McNulty Recital Hall.


Yoko Hirota will be performing miniature works for piano by Canadian and international composers on Friday February 12, 2010. Don't miss the pre-concert lecture by celebrated guest Canadian composer Robert Lemay.

As part of their Canadian Tour, Elena Denisova, violin and Alexei Kornienko, piano will be performing music by Canadian, Bulgarian and Austrian composers. Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 8:00 pm, Jean McNulty Recital Hall.

Contemporary music flautist Chenoa Anderson is teaming up with Canadian composer Ian Crutchley on April 16 at the Jean McNulty Recital Hall.

The much anticipated NEW MUSIC NORTH - first recording CD will be launched at a concert on October 3, 2008. New Music North presents a chamber music concert featuring works for flute, viola and piano at 7:30 p.m. on May 29, 2008 in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall. 

Don't miss the next concert by the Kanteletar Chamber Choir. Directed by Dean Jobin-Bevans, with mezzo-soprano Kim Erickson, this is the inaugural concert by this Thunder Bay based choir. The concert will also include chamber music by Canadian composers and will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2008, 7:30 p.m., St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church. 

The next New Music North concert features the Group of Seven and will take place on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 7:30 in the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. 

New Music North is resuming activities with a CD recording in May 2007 and a new concert series starting in September 2007. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Motion Ensemble Concert coming soon. A special new music concert is planned for Tuesday March 30.

Starting December 15, the Program Committee will convene to work on the development of a program for the 2004 Festival. All submitted scores will be carefully considered. Thanks to all of the composers who sent in scores.
