The purpose of this group is to support middle leaders and teachers of science. It aims to help them develop their the following for computing:
The curriculum
Subject-specific leadership
Subject knowledge
Subject-specific pedagogy
Newham Learning is working in partnership with STEM Learning through our local Science Learning Partnership, based at Alexandra Park School to continue the programme of meetings and training for teachers and leaders of science. Participants of sessions that were organised in the summer term of 2021-22 found these sessions to be helpful.
Subject leadership and subject knowledge meetings are free to access for teachers and leaders in schools that are Newham Learning members.
Attendance at the events will help leaders be confident that their curriculum plans are fit for purpose and up-to-date, that they are leading the subject well and that they can support teachers of the subject with their teaching and subject knowledge. This will help pupils succeed in science and develop the desire to study the subject in the longer term.
The subject knowledge sessions will have a specific focus each time and can be attended by leaders and class teachers. We can also accept multiple participants from schools, provided spaces are available. They will focus on developing both the knowledge of the subject that is required to teach it well, and also the subject-specific pedagogy required to teach the subject knowledge and disciplinary knowledge.
This offer is particularly pertinent for schools that are due to receive an Ofsted Inspection in the short or medium term as a subject ‘Deep Dive’ will focus on these issues.

For subject specific support, there are also, the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) - https://www.rsb.org.uk/, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) - https://www.rsc.org/ and the Institute of Physics (IOP) - https://www.iop.org/. These organisations are for support of the subject in all areas and not just education, but have educational sections and resources available.
Curriculum Hub
We are working with the main curriculum hub for science - the Science Learning Partnership, which is overseen by STEM Learning. You can visit the STEM Learning website here https://www.stem.org.uk/.
