New Faith Cathedral Church of God in Christ roots go back to the Young Voice of Africa Mission 7928 East 14th Street Oakland California. In 1981 Missionary Theodosia McKery, the Founder and Pastor Yaahn G. Hunter the Co-Founder had operated the Mission for three years. The Gospel was proclaimed, souls were saved, and outreach and social programs were established. Pastor Hunter felt led to start a church where people could get rooted and grounded in the Word of God. In 1984 Pastor Hunter was led to branch out and begin a small church in the home of Missionary Geraldine Keeby and several others. The New Fellowship was called New Life Christian Church.
Later that year Pastor Hunter and Minister Theopholis Kudulo found a large Banquet Room at the YMCA 2101 Telegraph Avenue Oakland CA available on Sundays to hold Sunday Church Services free of charge. The Church moved there and conducted worship services for one year. Baptisms took place in the YMCA Pool downstairs. Many members were added to the church.
In 1985 Pastor Hunter felt led to move the Church to Richmond after securing a building for rent owned by Pastor Tommie Bradford and Paul Foster at 406 MacDonald Avenue Richmond, CA. Many souls were added to the church. Outreach and Community Programs were established. The music ministry of the Church began to grow under the direction of First Lady Denise Hunter. As the church grew more space was needed.
Pastor Hunter found a building at 255 16th Street in Richmond that was available in 1994. It was here that Pastor Hunter had a vision to start a Christian School to minister to the educational needs of the children in the community. New Life Christian Academy was born and grew in number. Pastor Hunter began searching for a larger building that would be home of the Church and School.
1n 1995 Pastor Hunter found a vacant school at 3800 Clark Road El Sobrante CA. Pastor Hunter moved the School and Church there and the School continued to grow. It was here that Pastor Hunter became an ordained Pastor in the Church of God in Christ and joined the Living Daily with the Scriptures Fellowship under the leadership of his Pastor Bishop Harvey Lewis Sr., in Washington D.C. The School District later sold the School to a German Private School, but a door was open to take over the Mechanics Bank Building located at 830 MacDonald Avenue Richmond, CA.
Many souls were added to the Lord and the School and Church grew at the 830 Macdonald Building. Because of the faith that was necessary to expand the vision of the Ministry, the name of the church was changed to New Faith Cathedral Church of God in Christ. New Faith joined the Northern California First Jurisdiction under the leadership of Bishop Lonnie C. Patton. Six other churches joined the Jurisdiction with Pastor Hunter and he was ordained as the Superintendent of the Living Daily with the Scriptures District.
In 2014 a great miracle occurred. New Faith Cathedral Church of God in Christ purchased a mega facility on 3.25 Acres of land with over thirty four thousand square feet of building space, and a baseball field with bleachers and a concession stand! The Church moved into their new facility and began renovation on February 2, 2014.
Our Vision is to evangelize and reach our new community through Educational Programs, Community Outreach Programs, and however the Lord leads. We are so grateful for the wonderful grace of God for these 36 years of Ministry! Our entire history will be released in a later publication.
