The Nintendo eshop appears as part of the main menu for Wii u, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo switches. It requires an Internet connection to access. Initially, two versions of the Nintendo eshop between the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii u were independent of each other.
Although this is still true to a large extent, after the Nintendo 3DS implements the Nintendo network ID, users who register the same ID account between the two systems (currently registered once per console) can share some data between the two versions of eshop, such as combined fund balance, home address, saved credit and debit card information, wish list entries, and (previously) linked to Nintendo Club account. With the release of the Nintendo switch version of the Nintendo eshop, the balance stored on the Nintendo network ID can be shared or transferred to the Nintendo account for the Nintendo switch.
Eshop stores all the downloaded and purchased records, allowing users to download the previously purchased software for free when it is still available on eshop. Downloads can be launched immediately, or queued and pushed to the console when not in use or when the eshop application is not running.
Users upgrading from the Nintendo DSi system can transfer their previously purchased Dsiware to the Nintendo 3DS, with some exceptions, such as flipnote studio and DSI web browser. The December 2011 update enabled a similar feature that allows users to transfer their purchases between 3DS systems.
Before the Nintendo 3DS implemented the Nintendo network ID in December 2013, only five transmissions were allowed between the Nintendo 3DS systems. Thereafter, the restrictions on system transmission are permanently waived.
Unlike Wii store channels and DSI store services purchased with Nintendo points, Nintendo eshop (located on the Nintendo 3DS series, Wii u and Nintendo switches) is priced in the appropriate regional currencies, such as US dollars and euros. You can use a credit card or a prepaid card purchased in a store to fund your account.
Nintendo's eshop can be accessed from the main menu screen at any time, even if the game is already running. However, this feature is only available on Wii u and Nintendo switches. When using any other application on the Wii u or Nintendo switch, and when in sleep mode on the Nintendo 3DS, you can also download it in the background through spotpass.
Currently, 10 downloads can be queued at a time. You can check the status of the download on the main menu under download manager. If the notification is activated, a pop-up message will appear in the upper right corner of the screen informing the user that the download is complete.
