Most social bookmarking lists you will find are recycled from 2014. Delicious is on them. So is StumbleUpon. Both have been gone for years. The lists get copied, the dead entries never get removed, and people spend a weekend submitting to URLs that no longer resolve.
This list is shorter and sorted differently. Thirty-five platforms grouped by what they actually do, because a link on Reddit and a link on a generic submission site are not the same kind of thing and should not sit in the same list.
Set expectations first. Almost every link below is nofollow. Reddit, Pinterest, Medium, Quora and Tumblr all tag user-submitted URLs with nofollow or ugc attributes. If you are doing this for ranking power, the answer is that there is very little of it here. If you are doing it for traffic, distribution and brand mentions, there is quite a lot.

These have actual users. A submission can send meaningful traffic, and content that performs here often earns organic editorial links afterwards, which is where the real SEO value sits.
Reddit — The largest one by a distance. Links are nofollow. Every subreddit has its own rules and most ban self-promotion outright, so participate genuinely for weeks before you post anything of your own. Also heavily cited by AI answer engines, which matters more than the link attribute.
Hacker News — Technology and startup focused, with an extremely high quality bar and an unforgiving audience. A front-page post drives enormous traffic and frequently produces follow-on editorial links. Do not submit your own marketing content here.
Pinterest — Functionally a visual search engine rather than a bookmarking site. Nofollow, but the internal search traffic is substantial and pins have a long shelf life. Worth real effort if you produce any visual content.
Quora — Answer-driven. Genuinely useful answers get read for years. Links are nofollow. Quora Spaces lets you curate content around a topic, which is closer to classic bookmarking.
Medium — Publishing rather than bookmarking, but it functions as distribution. Use canonical tags when republishing your own content so you are not competing with yourself.
Tumblr — A blogging and bookmarking hybrid with a persistent, active community. Nofollow.
Flipboard — Magazine-style curation with genuine reach. Creating topic magazines and adding your content alongside third-party articles works better than posting only your own.
LinkedIn — Not usually classed as bookmarking, but for B2B it is where sharing actually reaches your buyers. Nofollow.
Bluesky — Growing quickly, open protocol, and increasingly crawled. Worth claiming your handle regardless.
Mastodon — Federated network. Posts propagate across connected instances, so reach is wider than any single instance suggests.
Slashdot — Long-running technology news community. Small compared to its peak, still active and still indexed.
Digg — Relaunched under new ownership. Worth watching rather than investing heavily in yet.
Product Hunt — For launches specifically. An empty profile does nothing; a launch does a great deal.
Designer News — Design and front-end community. Narrow and engaged.
GrowthHackers — Marketing and growth community with content submission.
Indie Hackers — Founder community. Genuine participation only; the audience spots promotion instantly.
Lobsters — Technology community, invite-only. Higher signal than most, and impossible to game.
Built as genuine tools rather than SEO platforms, which is exactly why the profiles look legitimate. Most allow public collections that get indexed.
Diigo — Bookmarking with annotation and highlighting. Public libraries are indexed. One of the few original-era platforms still properly maintained.
Raindrop.io — Modern bookmark manager with clean public collections. Genuinely pleasant to use, which means you will actually keep it updated.
Pearltrees — Visual bookmarking. Collections are long-lived and indexed.
Scoop.it — Content curation around topics, with a publishing layer on top.
Wakelet — Collection building, widely used in education. Public collections index well.
Symbaloo — Visual bookmark dashboards, also popular in education.
Start.me — Personal start pages with shareable public boards.
Papaly — Bookmark organisation with public sharing.
elink.io — Turns bookmark collections into publishable web pages and newsletters.
Padlet — Collaborative boards. Not marketed as bookmarking, works as it.
Instapaper — Read-later with public profile pages.
Mix — The successor to StumbleUpon, built around content discovery.
Worth being direct about this group. These are the sites that appear on every "500+ free bookmarking sites" list. They accept anything, they have almost no users, and they exist primarily for SEO submissions.
Folkd — One of the longer-running general bookmarking sites.
Bizsugar — Small business content community. Slightly more curated than most in this tier.
We Heart It — Visual sharing platform, image-led.
Bibsonomy — Academic bookmarking run by a German university. Genuinely institutional, which sets it apart from the rest of this tier.
Plurk — Microblogging platform with a following in Southeast Asia.
Trello — Public boards work as shareable link collections. Unconventional, but the domain is strong and the boards index.
A note on this tier: submissions here get indexed and contribute a small amount to profile diversity. They send no traffic, and no quantity of them will move a competitive keyword. Set them up once if you want the coverage, then leave them alone. If a list offers you five hundred of these, that is five hundred versions of the same negligible thing.
The original idea was straightforward: save a URL to a public platform so other people could find it. Delicious, StumbleUpon, Digg. The SEO version meant submitting your own URLs to as many of these as possible, and for a while it worked, because the links were followed and Google counted them roughly equally.
Two things broke that model permanently.
The links went nofollow. Reddit, Pinterest, Medium, Quora, Tumblr and Diigo all tag user-submitted links with nofollow or ugc attributes. The high-authority backlink people were chasing passes no ranking power. The platforms still offering followed links are, almost by definition, the ones that accept anything from anyone.
The behaviour disappeared. People stopped using dedicated bookmarking platforms. They save links in browser bookmarks, Notion, Slack or a group chat. The category lost its users, and a platform without users cannot send you traffic no matter what its authority score says.
What survived is the platforms with real communities. That is why Tier 1 above looks nothing like a 2014 bookmarking list.
Three things, none of which is ranking power.
Referral traffic, from Tier 1 only. A Reddit post in the right subreddit or a Hacker News submission that lands can send more traffic in a day than months of SEO. Tier 2 sends a trickle. Tier 3 sends nothing.
Indexation and discovery. A new URL on a low-traffic site can wait to be crawled. A submission on a frequently-crawled platform gives Googlebot another path to it. This mattered far more in 2010 than it does now, since XML sitemaps and Search Console handle it, so treat it as a minor convenience.
Brand mentions and AI visibility. The strongest argument, and the newest. Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found brand web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at a Spearman coefficient of 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Roughly three times the predictive strength, from mentions carrying no hyperlink at all. Muck Rack, across more than a million AI-cited links, found 82% came from earned media and 94% from non-paid sources.
Reddit in particular is heavily cited by AI answer engines, which makes genuine participation there worth more than the nofollow attribute suggests.
What it will not do: move a competitive commercial keyword. No volume of bookmarking submissions outranks a competitor with better content and real editorial links.
Write a real title. Not your page's H1 pasted in. Platform audiences respond to different framing than search engines do, and a title written for Google reads like spam on Reddit.
Write a genuine description. Two or three sentences explaining why someone should click. Identical descriptions across thirty platforms add nothing past the first instance.
Use the platform's tagging properly. Tags are how these platforms surface content internally. Generic tags mean nobody finds it.
Link to the specific page, not the homepage. Send each submission to the content it actually describes.
Submit other people's content too. A profile containing only your own URLs is a promotional account, and on Tier 1 platforms it will be treated as one. A ratio of roughly one self-promotional post to four or five genuinely useful shares is the standard advice, and it exists because it works.
Read the rules before posting. Especially on Reddit, where each subreddit sets its own and moderators enforce them without discussion.
Do not submit everything everywhere on the same day. Thirty submissions of the same URL within an hour, across thirty platforms, from one account name, is a pattern. Spread work across weeks.
Vary the accounts sensibly. Consistent branding across platforms is good for entity signals. Identical usernames, identical bios and identical submission timing across fifty low-quality sites is a fingerprint.
Do not automate Tier 1. Automated posting on Reddit or Hacker News gets accounts banned quickly and permanently.
Prioritise depth over coverage. Three platforms where you genuinely participate beat thirty where you dumped a link. This is the single most common mistake in the whole tactic.
Recheck quarterly. Ahrefs found 66.5% of links to sampled sites have rotted over roughly a decade. Bookmarking platforms close more often than most categories, so assume attrition.
Buying submission packages. Five hundred submissions from one provider produces one footprint, in one window, across sites sharing hosting and templates. The pattern is the problem, not the individual link.
Using exact-match commercial anchors. Where the platform allows anchor text, use your brand or the page title. Commercial keyword anchors at scale from bookmarking sites is the clearest manipulation signal in this tactic.
Treating Tier 3 as a strategy. It is a footnote. Doing more of it does not make it a strategy.
Expecting ranking movement. Track referral traffic and indexation. Attributing ranking changes to bookmarking submissions will mislead you, because the signal is far too weak to read.
Referral sessions by source in your analytics. This is the honest number, and for Tier 3 it will be zero.
Whether the submission page is indexed. Search the exact URL. If it is not indexed, the link does not exist as far as search is concerned.
Brand mention volume over time. Ahrefs Content Explorer, Brand24 or Semrush Brand Monitoring. This is the metric that actually connects to the AI visibility data above.
Not rankings. The causal link is too weak to attribute, and attributing it will lead you to keep doing the wrong thing.
Almost every social bookmarking link is nofollow. The value is traffic, distribution and mentions, not ranking power.
Tier 1 community platforms are the only ones that send meaningful traffic.
Reddit is heavily cited by AI answer engines, which makes genuine participation there worth more than the link attribute suggests.
Brand mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks.
Three platforms where you participate beat thirty where you dumped links.
Bulk submission packages produce a footprint and no benefit.
Measure referral traffic and indexation. Do not measure rankings.
Do social bookmarking sites still work for SEO in 2026? In a narrow way. Almost all links are nofollow, so they pass no ranking authority. The value is referral traffic from platforms with active communities, plus brand mention signals that contribute to AI search visibility.
Are social bookmarking links dofollow or nofollow? Mostly nofollow. Reddit, Pinterest, Medium, Quora, Tumblr and Diigo all use nofollow or ugc attributes. Platforms still offering followed links tend to be the ones that accept any submission from anyone.
Which social bookmarking sites are worth using? The ones with real communities: Reddit, Hacker News, Pinterest, Quora, Flipboard and the relevant niche platforms for your industry. Curation tools like Diigo, Raindrop and Pearltrees are worth a public collection. General submission sites are a footnote.
How many bookmarking sites should I submit to? Depth beats coverage. Genuine participation on three platforms produces more than submissions to thirty. If you want broad coverage for profile diversity, set it up once and stop.
Can social bookmarking hurt my rankings? Usually the links are discounted rather than penalised. Since the December 2022 SpamBrain update, Google's approach to manipulated links has been to devalue them. The exception is bulk automated submission, which produces a detectable pattern.
What happened to Delicious and StumbleUpon? Both shut down. Delicious closed after several ownership changes, and StumbleUpon was folded into Mix. Any list still featuring them was copied rather than checked.
Do these platforms help with AI search visibility? Yes, through mentions rather than links. Ahrefs found brand web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks, and Reddit specifically is a heavily cited source across AI answer engines.
Should I use automated bookmarking tools? No. Automated submission produces empty templated profiles that get deleted, gets accounts banned on the platforms that actually matter, and leaves a footprint on the ones that do not.
Social bookmarking is a distribution tactic that got mistaken for a link building tactic, and the confusion has cost people a lot of weekends.
Pick three platforms where your audience genuinely is. Participate properly for a few months. Set up the rest once for coverage and leave them alone.
Then measure traffic and mentions, not rankings, because traffic and mentions are what this actually produces.
