Backlinks still work in 2026, but not the way most guides describe. Referring domains correlate with Google rankings at a Spearman coefficient of roughly 0.22 to 0.24, which is a real signal and a weak one. Meanwhile the strongest predictor of whether an AI answer engine mentions your brand is not links at all. It is unlinked brand mentions, at nearly three times the correlation strength.
So the honest answer to "should I still build links" is yes, with a completely different set of priorities than the ones you probably inherited from a 2019 blog post.
Below is what changed, how to evaluate a link before you chase it, and a list of platforms where you can build profile and mention links yourself. No authority scores attached, and there is a reason for that which I'll get to.
These are live, real placements. Every one of them was created and verified by hand. I have deliberately not attached DA or DR figures to any of them, because those numbers are stale within weeks, they can be inflated cheaply, and Google does not use them. Section 3 explains how to evaluate any of these yourself in about ninety seconds.
Most of these are nofollow. That is fine, and section 5 explains why that matters less than it used to.

Yes, but the public record is more complicated than most people assume, and it is worth reading it in order.
In September 2023, Gary Illyes told a conference audience that people overestimate links, that he does not agree they sit in the top three ranking factors, and that they have not for some time. In March 2024, alongside the core update, Google quietly removed the word "important" from the sentence in its spam policy documentation describing links as a ranking signal. One word. In April 2024, Illyes went further and said Google needs very few links to rank pages, and that Google has made links less important over the years. John Mueller has said the total number of links is essentially completely irrelevant.
Now the other side of the ledger. Backlinko's analysis of 11.8 million search results found the top result has 3.8 times more backlinks than positions two through ten. Ahrefs, studying a million SERPs, found referring domains correlate with rankings at 0.22 to 0.24 overall and 0.33 for local queries. In a 2025 Authority Hacker survey, 58.4% of SEOs rated the impact of links at seven or higher out of ten.
Both things are true. Links are a real signal that is weaker than the industry acts like it is, and a strong link profile still tracks with sites that rank. The correlation exists because good sites earn links, not because links manufacture good sites. That distinction is the whole game.
One more number worth sitting with: Ahrefs found 94% of all online content earns zero external backlinks. The bar is not "get a thousand links." The bar is "be the kind of page anyone would link to at all."
This is the reason there are no DA numbers in the list above.
Direct answer: Domain Authority is a Moz metric. Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric. Authority Score is a Semrush metric. All three are third-party estimates built from backlink data. John Mueller has stated plainly that Google does not use Domain Authority at all for crawling, indexing, or ranking. The same applies to DR and Authority Score.
They are still useful. They are just useful as a rough screen, not as a decision.
Three practical problems with leading on the score:
They measure the wrong thing. DR is almost purely a link-graph score. Ahrefs is transparent that it excludes traffic, spam signals, and domain age. A site can carry a high DR on top of weak topical fit and no real search visibility.
They are cheap to inflate. Industry research suggests both DA and DR can be artificially raised for as little as fifteen dollars. Any metric with a price tag that low is a filter, not a verdict.
Domain authority does not flow evenly to every page. This is the single most common reason a link from a strong domain does nothing. A high-authority domain can have thousands of pages that have never ranked for anything. Your link sits on a domain Google trusts, on a page Google has no relationship with.
A site with a modest DR and twenty-five thousand monthly organic visitors in your topic area is a healthier placement than a high-DR domain with no traffic. Check the page, not just the domain.
Run this on any prospect, including everything in the list above. It takes about ninety seconds per site once you have the habit.
Does the domain have consistent, verifiable organic traffic? Not a spike. A stable line. Sudden traffic jumps can signal manipulation.
Is the traffic in a country that matters to you? Traffic concentrated in irrelevant geographies is a red flag.
Does the specific page you would appear on rank for anything? Pull the URL, not just the root domain.
Is the topic relevant or adjacent to yours? Off-topic links get indexed and discounted.
Would the link sit in the main content? In-content beats footer, sidebar, and dedicated links pages.
Does the site's own outbound link profile look editorial or transactional? If it links to casinos, kettles, and supplements in the same week, you have your answer.
How does the site make money? Sites that primarily sell links carry more risk than sites with diversified monetisation.
Is the anchor natural and varied, or does the site publish the same exact-match phrasing for every client?
Does the ratio of indexed pages to organic traffic make sense? Thousands of pages and no traffic means the content is not earning anything.
A site that clears all nine is worth pursuing. A site that clears only the authority-score check is not, whatever the number says.
The most common mistake in profile link building is expecting the wrong outcome from the right activity. Sort your placements by job, not by score.
Every link type has one job it does well and at least one job it will never do. Problems start when you buy the first and expect the second.
Profile and platform links. These get your domain crawled and keep your brand details consistent everywhere someone might check. Over a few dozen placements they build a footprint that AI systems can read when they are working out whether your brand is a real entity. What they will not do is move a competitive commercial keyword. Nobody has ever outranked a determined competitor with profile links.
Directory and local listings. Their value is name, address and phone consistency, which supports local pack visibility, plus a trickle of referral traffic from people who actually browse directories. Treat any authority they pass as a bonus rather than the reason you built them.
Guest posts on relevant sites. This is where contextual relevance and genuine link equity live, because your link sits inside content about your topic on a site that covers your topic. The whole thing collapses if the host has no organic traffic. A guest post on a dead site is a writing exercise.
Digital PR and earned media. The strongest option available, and the only one that reliably produces the kind of brand mentions AI engines cite. It buys authority, coverage and citation eligibility. It does not happen fast and it does not happen cheap, so budget for months rather than weeks.
Unlinked mention reclamation. If a quality site has already named your brand without linking, asking for the link is the cheapest good link you will ever get. The obvious limit is that you cannot reclaim more mentions than you have, so it is a quick win rather than a channel.
The list in this post is tier one work. It is foundational, it is worth doing properly and once, and it will not by itself rank a commercial page. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Here is the finding that should change how you budget.
Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands to see which factors correspond with brand visibility in Google's AI Overviews. Brand web mentions came out on top with a Spearman correlation of 0.664. Backlinks landed at 0.218. Roughly three times the predictive strength, from mentions that carry no hyperlink at all. The top three correlations were all off-site brand signals: web mentions at 0.664, branded anchors at 0.527, and brand search volume at 0.392.
The distribution is brutal. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions. The quartile below averaged 14. The bottom half barely registered. If your brand sits in the lower fifty percent of web mentions, you are close to invisible to AI systems regardless of how your SEO is performing.
A December 2025 follow-up extended the same work to ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. YouTube mentions correlated at roughly 0.737, the strongest single signal Ahrefs measured.
Supporting evidence from elsewhere:
Moz ran 40,000 queries through Google AI Mode and found 88% of citations came from pages outside the organic top ten.
Muck Rack analysed over a million AI-cited links and found 82% came from earned media, and 94% from non-paid sources.
SALT.agency, across 5,825 URLs, put backlink correlation with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini visibility at 0.39 to 0.42, and with AI Overviews at 0.25.
Semrush, across 1,000 domains, found Authority Score correlates with AI mentions at 0.65, but the gains only appear once a domain crosses a certain authority tier. Below that tier, more backlinks do not move the needle.
What this means practically. Backlinks are a threshold condition for AI citation, not the driver. They help you clear the bar to be considered. Once you are past it, mentions, co-citations, and how your content is structured decide whether you actually get cited.
It also reframes the nofollow question. If mentions matter more than the link attribute, then a nofollow profile on a platform that AI crawlers read is doing real work. Google has treated nofollow, sponsored, and ugc as hints rather than directives since 2019 anyway. Judging a placement purely on whether it passes link equity is a 2015 habit.
And yet, from a Q1 2026 survey of 500 SEO professionals: three-quarters believe backlinks influence AI visibility, and only 19% have changed how they build. That gap is the opportunity.
Google's enforcement got faster and its definition of manipulation got wider.
Site reputation abuse. Announced with the March 2024 core update, enforcement from May 5, 2024. It targets third-party content published on a host domain primarily to exploit that host's ranking signals. Publishers pulled entire coupon and affiliate sections down. Worth being precise here: enforcement has run through manual actions since launch, and Google has said it intends to make it algorithmic. Claims that it became fully algorithmic in August 2025 are not something Google has confirmed, and Google stated the March 2026 spam update did not target site reputation abuse.
A regulatory split. On November 13, 2025 the European Commission opened formal DMA proceedings into the policy after a complaint from the European Publishers Council. On August 28, 2026 Google confirmed that from August 30 it would stop letting site reputation abuse manual actions influence results for users in the European Economic Area. The classification machinery stays intact and the algorithmic layer survives, so this is a change to the penalty, not to the rule.
Manipulating AI answers is now spam. On May 15, 2026 Google rewrote its spam policy definition to cover AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Enforcement speed. The August 2025 spam update ran 27 days. The March 2026 update finished in 19.5 hours, the fastest on record. June 2026 wrapped in about two days.
Bad links are mostly worthless rather than dangerous. Since the December 2022 SpamBrain link spam update, Google's stated approach is to discount manipulated links rather than penalise. Illyes has advised ignoring negative SEO link attacks. Mueller has suggested Google might eventually retire the disavow tool. That tells you how much weight Google puts on it.
The practical read: the downside of a low-quality link in 2026 is usually wasted effort, not a penalty. The exception is a pattern that looks engineered at scale.
Digital PR. In a 2025 Editorial.Link survey, 48.6% of SEOs named it the most effective tactic. Guest posting came second at 16%, linkable assets third at 12%. It is also the most expensive, at $1,250 to $1,500 per link, and the only one that reliably produces the earned-media mentions AI engines cite.
Journalist request platforms. Cision shut Connectively down on December 9, 2024 and the HARO brand returned in 2025 under new ownership. The tactic survived the platform. Source of Sources, Qwoted, Help a B2B Writer, SourceBottle and ResponseSource all run now, and the #JournoRequest feed on X and Bluesky costs nothing. Response speed matters more than pitch quality on most of them.
Linkable assets. Backlinko's study of 912 million posts found content over 2,000 words attracts 77% more backlinks. Statistics pages pull 2.6 times more links than how-to articles and 3.1 times more than opinion pieces. Original data is the most reliable link magnet there is, which is why this post cites so much of other people's.
Unlinked mention reclamation. If your brand is already named on a quality site without a link, that is the cheapest good link available to you. Ahrefs Content Explorer, Brand24, and Semrush Brand Monitoring will surface them.
Competitor gap outreach. Pull the backlink profiles of the top three to five sites ranking for your target terms. Domains that already link to competitors have proven they will link in your niche. Filter that list through the nine checks above.
Profile and platform footprint. The work in the list at the top of this post. Foundational, does not scale into rankings, and worth completing once and maintaining.
Two reality checks on all of it: only 8.5% of cold outreach emails receive any response, based on Pitchbox data across 12 million emails. And of 26,000-plus guest post sites BuzzStream analysed, only 7.6% met a baseline of DR or DA above 65 with more than 10,000 monthly organic visits. The inventory is mostly junk. Plan your hit rate accordingly.
Prices vary far more by method than by the authority of the site you land on, which is not what most people assume when they start shopping.
Niche edits and link insertions are the cheapest route at roughly $141 to $361, because you are paying for placement inside an article that already exists and already ranks. No writing, no editorial cycle, and often faster ranking impact for the same reason.
Standard guest posts run about $220 to $600. That band covers most of the market and most of its disappointments, since it includes a large volume of sites with thin traffic that still charge like real publishers.
High-quality guest posts sit closer to $609 to $930. The gap over a standard placement is editorial standards, not just a higher authority score. These sites reject pitches, ask for expert-level writing, and have organic traffic you can verify.
Digital PR placements are the most expensive at $1,250 to $1,500 each, and the only tier that reliably lands you on publications that do not sell links through any other channel.
Going through an agency averages $1,459 per link regardless of tier, which is roughly three to four times direct publisher pricing. Some providers separate the publisher fee from the service fee on the invoice. Ask for that split before you sign anything.
Across 52,671 websites and more than 155,000 guest post offers, Adsy found the average guest post price rose from $427 to $459 year over year, a 7.5% increase, with the steepest rises on high-DR sites carrying real traffic. The widely cited average price SEOs accept for a single quality link is $508.95. Listed prices run around four times higher than actual transaction prices, so the sticker is a starting position.
Sources also report the quality floor moving up, from roughly DR 30 a few years ago to DR 65 plus 10,000 monthly organic visits today.
If you are quoted under $150 for an editorial link, you are buying inventory from the 92% that failed the quality screen.
Ahrefs found 66.5% of links to sampled sites have rotted since 2013, and 74.5% are lost for SEO purposes. Linkody's study put it at close to 44% lost after seven years. Sites shut down, redesign, delete content, and change CMS.
A workable cadence:
Monthly: check new referring domains and lost links in Search Console or your tool of choice.
Quarterly: re-verify your foundational profile links still resolve and still contain your URL. Platforms silently change link handling.
Every six months: re-run the nine checks on your top twenty referring domains. Sites decline.
On timing expectations: most links take around eight to nine weeks after crawling to affect rankings. In an Authority Hacker survey, 618 of 755 respondents saw impact within one to six months, with the majority in the one to three month band. Nothing here moves in a week.
Referring domains correlate with rankings at 0.22 to 0.24. Real, and weaker than the industry behaves.
Google does not use DA, DR, or Authority Score. Use them to screen, never to decide.
Brand mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks. Budget accordingly.
88% of Google AI Mode citations come from outside the organic top ten.
Only 7.6% of available guest post inventory meets a basic quality bar.
Bad links in 2026 are usually worthless rather than dangerous, unless the pattern looks engineered.
Two thirds of links rot over a decade. Link building is maintenance, not a project.
Do backlinks still matter for SEO in 2026?
Yes, with reduced weight. Google's Gary Illyes said in 2023 that links are not a top-three ranking factor and have not been for some time, and Google removed the word "important" from its spam policy description of links in March 2024. Independent data still shows referring domains correlating with rankings at 0.22 to 0.24.
Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?
No. Domain Authority is a Moz metric. John Mueller has stated that Google does not use it for crawling, indexing, or ranking. The same applies to Ahrefs Domain Rating and Semrush Authority Score.
Are nofollow backlinks worth building?
Yes. Google reclassified nofollow, sponsored, and ugc as hints rather than directives in 2019. More importantly, Ahrefs found unlinked brand mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks, which makes the mention itself valuable independent of the link attribute.
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
There is no universal number. WebFX analysed 1,462 domains across 15 industries and found a roughly 40x range between verticals. Benchmark against the sites currently ranking for your specific terms rather than against a general figure.
How long do backlinks take to work?
Roughly eight to nine weeks after the linking page is crawled. In an Authority Hacker survey, most respondents observed impact within one to three months, and 618 of 755 saw it within six.
Can bad backlinks hurt my site?
Usually they are wasted rather than harmful. Since the December 2022 SpamBrain update Google's approach is to discount manipulated links. Illyes has advised ignoring negative SEO link attacks entirely, and Mueller has suggested the disavow tool may eventually be retired.
What is site reputation abuse?
Publishing third-party content on a host domain primarily to exploit that host's ranking signals. Google announced the policy with the March 2024 core update and began enforcement on May 5, 2024. From August 30, 2026 Google stopped applying manual actions under this policy to users in the European Economic Area, following European Commission proceedings, though the underlying classification remains.
Should I build backlinks or brand mentions for AI search?
Both, weighted toward mentions. Backlinks act as a threshold condition that gets you considered by retrieval systems. Once past that threshold, brand mentions, co-citations, and content structure determine whether you are actually cited.
The version of link building that worked in 2018 was a volume problem. The version that works now is a qualification problem. Fewer placements, checked properly, on sites with real traffic in topics adjacent to yours, plus a deliberate effort to get your brand named in places you cannot control.
Build the foundational footprint once. Then spend the rest of your budget on being worth mentioning.
