The New Rochelle Shotokan Karate Club is a member of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), a global organization founded by the late Grand Master Teruyuki Okazaki, 10th Dan in 1977. Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki, 9th Dan, is Chairman and Chief Instructor of the ISKF. Headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, the organization counts hundreds of affiliate clubs across the world--in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Our club is also a member of the Maynard Miner Karate Academy (formerly the Flatbush Shotokan Karate Dojo) in Brooklyn, NY. The FSKD was founded by Sensei Maynard Miner, 8th Dan, the late Chief Instructor of the organization. He is said to be the first American to bring Shotokan Karate to the US after having trained at the Japan Karate Association and having received his Shodan (first degree black belt) ranking from Master Masatoshi Nakayama in the 1950s. Sensei Miner brought more than a half century of experience teaching Shotokan Karate to his students.
Lidj Lewis, 6th Dan, is Chief Instructor of the New Rochelle Shotokan Karate Club. He has been training in Shotokan Karate since the 1970s and has taught Shotokan karate since 2003.
