The Appomattox Court House National Historic Park photo gallery includes photos as the village appears today; the courthouse, the McLean House, the Clover Hill Tavern and others. Compare them with the historic photos from the 1800s.

My husband and I bought a house earlier this year. As we go forward making changes to it, I really want to keep the old photos of the house in the listing so we can go back and see what it looked like before.

Anne had to share a room with Fritz Pfeffer, which led to frequent arguments. Not being able to go outside was hard for her. Her diary was a place to vent. To brighten up the room, Anne put pictures on the wall.

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States and a living historic house containing a collection of museum-quality objects. This collection of fine and decorative arts encompasses both historic objects associated with the White House and the presidency, and significant works by a variety of American and European artists and craftsmen generally consonant with the historic character of the house. The Curator of the White House manages the care and preservation for the collections.

The White House Historical Association acts as steward to the White House Collection. The Association maintains images of two-and three-dimensional works of art, images of the house and grounds and images of decorative objects and furnishing within the house. Many of these images have been featured in the White House Historical Association publications.

The biggest and most impressive room in the house is the 70-foot high Banquet Hall (photo at top of page) with the massive triple fireplace and 1916 Skinner pipe organ. The dinner table seats 38 with plenty of space for additional small tables. The Flemish tapestries are from the 1500s.

The house is a staggering 175,000 square feet (four acres) with 33 bedrooms, 65 fireplaces and 43 bathrooms. Almost 10 million pounds of limestone was used to build it. The entire estate originally covered 125,000 acres (now it's a modest 8,000 acres).

George Vanderbilt engaged two of the most distinguished designers of the 19th century: architect Richard Morris Hunt (1828-1895) and landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903). The four-story stone house with a 780-foot faade was designed to rival the surrounding mountains in grandeur. Hunt modeled the architecture on the richly ornamented style of the French Renaissance and adapted elements, such as the stair tower and the steeply pitched roof, from three famous early 16th-century chteaux in the Loire Valley: Blois, Chenonceau and Chambord. Its scale continues to be astounding: the house contains more than 11 million bricks; the massive stone spiral staircase rises four floors and has 102 steps. Through its center hangs an iron chandelier suspended from a single point, containing 72 electric light bulbs.

Hanging pictures in combination with plates can make for a punchier arrangement than pictures alone. In the bathroom of his Worcestershire house, Farrow & Ball brand ambassador Patrick O'Donnell has hung Spanish lebrillo plates from Brownrigg Interiors in Tetbury at either side of two small landscape paintings.

An informal picture lean can be a charming alternative to a hang, and works particularly beautifully in a modern interior. In this bathroom in Thomas Dane's Gloucestershire farmhouse, a photographic portrait of Samuel Beckett leans above the bath.

The art above the sofa in Angelica Squire's house is by the painter Marina Anaya, and consists of four pieces joined together. Its size sits well within the proportions of the space, and anchors the dining area in an open plan room.

With her lampshade-making business starting to take over her west London family home, Rosi de Ruig moved operations to a nearby studio and took the chance to give the Victorian house a vibrant new look. Hand-painted plates from Burgio in Sicily add decorative touches below the glass roof, as do the paintings, which add even more colour and depth to the space.

Every bit of wall space in Violet Dent's London flat has been used to display pictures, prints and paintings soured from all manner of places. There is no rhyme or reason to it, it's simply a gloriously eclectic gallery wall across the entire flat.

The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design and punchy colours. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. 'The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,' says Beata.

Two rows of botanical prints and antique celadon vases on plinths help to break up the height of this lofty, light-filled space on the first floor of Alexandra Tolstoy's Chelsea house, decorated by designers from Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler.

This graceful drawing room in the Cotswolds is blessed with light thanks to a large bay window overlooking the garden. Architect Robert Hardwick designed the panelling, which is painted in Farrow & Ball's 'Old White'. Antique textiles and paintings enhance the airy feel. The house in its present form is only 20 years old, the result of hard work and imagination on the part of the owners and Robert, who is an expert in Costwolds vernacular.

Colefax and Fowler's Emma Burns combines pictures of all shapes and sizes over the fireplace of Alexandra Tolstoy's cottage for a charming, higgledy-piggledy look that works wonderfully with the cosy feel of the room.

Maps look fantastic in frames. This huge example in a Dartmoor house by designer Guy Goodfellow has been neatly cut into sections spanning floor to ceiling, taking on a similar look to a mural or finely patterned wallpaper. Symmetry is key to getting this look right. Make sure the gaps between your pictures are scrupulously even.

It was a milieu steeped in polytheism and idol worship. So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against images and pictures as they were associated with such beliefs and practices which Islam came to eradicate. Islam sought to restore pure tawhid or monotheism. 17dc91bb1f
