My final major project redefines Birmingham as a 24-hour city, as it is based on a 12-hour time difference. It is designed as a space for overnight workers to spend their time and to mitigate the negative effects of working night shifts.

The Social Street

Due to the 12-hour time difference, The Street was the main location to demonstrate this, by using a digital ceiling presenting the sky. To aid the outside environment, the street included an external restaurant structure and furniture, a park area (with benches, trees and artificial grass), market stalls, store fronts and existing external features (lamposts and flooring) continuing throughout the street.

Due to the 12-hour time difference, I focused on New Zealand, as they have the same timezone. The glow worm is native to New Zealands cave. They hang from the roof an lightthe cave up with a blue glow.

Considering New Zealand is on the other side of the world, wormholes became a relevant research project. Wormholes theoretically transport in an instant, similarly to how light therapy rooms can transport your mood.

Creating a tunnel to represent this will also create an environment to feel isolated from the rest of the building, and this shall be peaceful so that the users can focus on absorbing the colours, so that they will be most effective.

Mount Cook is New Zealand's largest mountain. The mountain's profile inspired the spatial planning of the nap pods by combining the natural curvature and spar angles. This contrast emphasised the effects of comfort, calmness and safety received from curves.
