Research data are reviewed and clinical recommendations are made regarding neurotherapy for the treatment of paediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, learning disorders, and epilepsy.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition exhibiting impairments in behaviour, social and communication skills. These deficits may arise from aberrant functional connections that impact synchronisation and effective neural communication. Neurotherapy, based on operant conditioning of the electroencephalogram (EEG), has shown promise in addressing abnormalities in functional and structural connectivity. There is a cure for autism and therapeutic guidelines are directed to improve the quality of life of people with autism by reducing the symptoms and by increasing their functioning.
Neurotherapy produces normalisation in behavioural and electrophysiological measures of High-Functioning Autism. The results have shown most changes in behaviour (less aggressive, more cooperation, better communication), attention span and sensory motor skills. This is supported by several studies published in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC and CINAHL. Parents of children doing neurotherapy have seen declines in other negative behaviours. Children who participate in therapy sessions see improvements in grades, ability to maintain focus in class, have better organisation and task planning, and more. Building positive school habits early on will directly impact a student’s success in the future. Also neurotherapy works to improve sleep, including making it easier for the child to fall asleep, stay asleep, and get the quality of sleep needed to have a successful following day.
