Observed Behavior: focus 

• defined using point system 

  • observed looking at professor/lecture slides: +1 

  • observed taking notes/answering in class: +2 

  • 0-6: little observed focus | 7-13: moderate observed focus | 14-20: high observed focus | 21+: extremely focused 

Coding method: Random sampling method 

• behavior was observed at equally spread out intervals of 10 minutes, beginning at 4:00 pm and concluding at 5:00 pm

Observations 

• 4:00 - 0 (not looking at lecture notes, glancing around classroom) 

• 4:10 - +3 (taking notes, looking at lecture slides) 

• 4:20 - +1 (looking at lecture slides) 

• 4:30 - +1 (looking at professor during lecture) 

• 4:40 - +1 (watching lecture video) 

• 4:50 - +3 (taking notes, watching professor) 

• 5:00 - +5 (taking notes, looking at lecture slides, asking questions)

• overall score: +14 (high observed focus)

Strengths of this method 

• very unobstructed and natural 

• unobtrusive 

Weaknesses 

• only snapshots of behavior

• information could be lost between intervals
