If you want closed-back headphones for focused listening and calls, choose Neumann NDH20; if you need a complete DJ mixing setup for calls between sessions, choose Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500. For calls, the Neumann is the more direct headphone choice, while the Hercules bundle is built around hands-on DJ work, with headphones included as part of a broader setup.
Neumann NDH20 vs Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 at a Glance
• Neumann NDH20: Its closed-back, circumaural design and memory-foam ear pads suit focused monitoring; the trade-off is a wired connection and a recommended 150-ohm headphone amp.
• Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500: Its controller, software, speakers, headphones, and cables make it a broader DJ setup; the trade-off is that it is not a dedicated call headset.
• Choose the NDH20 if you want a standalone headphone for monitoring in noisy surroundings and value passive isolation.
• Choose the Inpulse 500 if you want controls and connections for learning, practicing, or performing DJ mixes, with headphone cueing built in.
• For call-focused listening, the NDH20 is the clearer match of these two, but its listed features do not include Bluetooth or a built-in microphone.
The Neumann NDH20 is a closed-back, over-ear headphone designed for monitoring and mixing. Its circumaural fit surrounds the ears, while its closed-back construction provides passive isolation. That combination makes it a sensible option for listening in a shared room, working near background noise, or concentrating on audio without relying on active noise control. The product information describes a balanced sound image and high resolution, qualities that are relevant when the goal is to monitor or assess sound rather than simply fill a room with music.
Comfort matters when headphones stay on through a long session. The NDH20 uses memory-foam ear pads, and the product description identifies long-term comfort as a design aim. Its frequency range is listed as 5 Hz to 30 kHz, and its impedance is 150 ohms. A headphone amplifier is recommended, so I would factor the source equipment into the decision rather than assume every device will drive it equally well. It connects by wire through a 3.5 mm jack, with straight and coiled cable options listed.
For calls, the NDH20 may make sense for someone who wants a closed-back listening headphone and already has a separate way to speak on calls. It is not listed as a Bluetooth model, and the provided information does not specify an integrated microphone. That matters: the phrase “best open ear headphones for calls” points toward a different kind of listening experience, while the NDH20 is explicitly closed-back and intended for isolation and monitoring.
Who should skip it: Skip the NDH20 if wireless listening or an all-in-one headset microphone is essential, or if you do not want to consider the recommended headphone amp.
The Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 is not simply a pair of headphones. It is a DJ controller bundle built around a two-channel mixer, with dual capacitive-touch 5.5-inch jog wheels, 16 RGB performance pads, loop controls, tempo faders, a dedicated effects section, and a three-band EQ for each deck. Those controls give a learner or working DJ physical tools for cueing, adjusting tracks, and shaping a mix. The controller also includes an AUX input with a filter and balanced and unbalanced master outputs.

The bundle also includes a pair of 3.5-inch powered nearfield monitors, DJ software licenses for Serato DJ Lite and DJUCED, and the cables needed for setup. The software’s guided beat-matching tools and visual guides may be useful to someone learning the basics, while the controller’s pads, jog wheels, EQ, and effects provide room to work more actively with tracks. For someone searching for the “best Bluetooth headset for calls,” this is a mismatch: the supplied information does not list Bluetooth, and its central purpose is DJ mixing rather than wireless calling.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best fit for focused, isolated headphone listening → Neumann NDH20. It is a closed-back, over-ear model with passive isolation, designed for monitoring and mixing.
• Best fit for learning to DJ → Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500. The controller includes guided software features, visual beat-matching assistance, jog wheels, performance pads, and tempo controls.
• Best for a headphone-only purchase → Neumann NDH20. It is the straightforward choice if you are comparing the headphones themselves, rather than looking for a full DJ workstation.
• Best for cueing a mix while using speakers → Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500. Its built-in interface supports headphone cueing, and the bundle includes powered monitors.
• Best for choosing between a straight and coiled cable → Neumann NDH20. Both cable styles are listed, alongside a wired 3.5 mm connection.
• Best for connecting headphones with either a 1/4-inch or 1/8-inch plug → Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500. The controller offers both headphone output sizes.
• Best if a microphone connection on the main equipment matters → Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500. It has a 1/4-inch microphone input with level control; that is separate from the included headphones.
• Best match for calls with no separate mic requirement → Neither is a complete, clearly specified call headset. The NDH20 is a headphone without a listed built-in mic, and the Hercules bundle is a DJ setup rather than a Bluetooth calling product.
Start with the job you expect to do most often. If that job is listening through headphones, the NDH20 keeps the choice focused: it has a closed-back design, passive isolation, memory-foam ear pads, and a wired connection. The main practical question is whether your audio source can work appropriately with its 150-ohm impedance; the product recommends a headphone amp. For calls, also consider how you will speak. No built-in microphone is specified for the NDH20, so plan on a separate microphone or another call device if you need to transmit your voice.
The Hercules bundle asks a different question: do you want to mix music at a desk? Its jog wheels, mixer controls, pads, effects, software, monitors, and included cables form a more complete starting point for DJ practice. The microphone input is useful as a connection on the controller, but it should not be confused with a microphone integrated into the headphones. Likewise, headphone cueing is part of the audio interface, not a claim that the included headphones have wireless call features.
My Verdict
In my opinion, I would choose the Neumann NDH20 if my priority were headphone listening, monitoring, and calls where I already had a separate microphone. Its closed-back build and passive isolation make it the more direct fit for that role, though it is wired and an amplifier is recommended. For calls, I would not treat it as a complete headset based on the listed features. I would choose the Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 instead if I wanted to learn or practice DJ mixing and wanted the controller, software, monitors, headphones, and cables together.
It is a wired, closed-back headphone with passive isolation, which may suit listening during calls in a noisy setting. A built-in microphone is not specified, so you would need a separate way to speak.
Yes. The bundle includes closed-back DJ headphones intended for cueing and monitoring, along with the controller, powered monitors, cables, and DJ software. The listed details do not identify those headphones as a Bluetooth call headset.
The NDH20 is specifically described as having a closed-back design with passive isolation and suitability for loud or noisy environments. The Hercules bundle’s included headphones are also described as closed-back, but the supplied information does not give a comparable isolation specification for them.
They serve different purposes. The NDH20 is a dedicated monitoring headphone, while the Inpulse 500 is a DJ controller bundle that includes headphones for cueing and monitoring. Choose based on whether you need headphones or a broader DJ setup.
