Environmental challenges of the construction industry
The construction industry and the built sector are responsible for 39% of the world’s CO2 emissions, 36% of energy use and 35.9% of global resource consumption. With over one-third impact on climate change, the construction industry needs intervention to achieve net zero in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Innovation vs Impact
Significant research has been carried out over the years to develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry. Despite the large number of studies, only a few solutions go beyond the lab. As a result, we have innovation without impact.
Additional research is needed to transfer the innovation from the lab to the land and create a green transition to the construction industry. This is only possible through industry-academia collaboration and training the next generation of engineers and researchers in lab-to-land research.
Why Building Products
Transition of sustainable solutions requires the training of industry stakeholders. Training the end user is more challenging as the learning curve is steep, with limited end-users reaping the benefits. Alternatively, engineering the research into a user-friendly product has a greater potential for technology transition.
Few product manufacturers can reach to a larger end user base
The product manufacturers can ensure quality control, reducing the learning curve
Standards exist for building products, simplifying the legal compliance
End users get a familiar product, making it easy-to-use
The Project
In alignment with the needs of the green transition in the industry, the project leads, Dr Reyes Garcia and Prof Sandeep Chaudhary, developed a pedagogic strategy, focusing on a joint academic/industry training programme to speed up net zero in construction. The strategy focuses on upskilling the young researchers & engineers, enhancing their employability, and preparing them for the green transition, through an industry-academia Mentoring Scheme. The project exploring the new pedagogic approach is being executed as part of the Transnational Education grants by the British Council.
