On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the Botanical Garden of the University of Salzburg invites you to the Species and Nature Conservation Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The focus will be on endangered plant and animal species in Austria as well as the question of how each of us can actively contribute to their protection. Embark on a journey of discovery through the Botanical Garden: exciting interactive stations and information booths will provide fascinating insights into the native animal and plant world.
Participation in Phytoterapy congress
On September 26 2025, Sabrina from FH Saltzburg had the opportunity to give a presentation at the phytotherapy congress. Titled “Dermatological Potential of Alpine Medicinal Plants”, she presented, among other things, the results of the NETTLE Project. She showcased both the project and the scientific findings in an engaging way, providing participants with fascinating insights into the dermatological effects and potential applications of these plants.
Saltzburg Health Days
As part of the Salzburg Health Days, Anja Schuster gave a presentation entitled “The Potential of Plant Extracts as an Alternative to Cortisone & Co.” and was able to present the NETTLE project to the participants in this context.
Herb walk in Trattberg
As part of the Interreg NETTLE project, a herb walk took place at Trattberg in St. Koloman in early June 2025. Researchers from Salzburg University of Applied Sciences presented first results on bioactive plant extracts and their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Together with herbal educator Martina Egger, around 25 participants explored the local flora and learned about both scientific and traditional aspects of the plants.

Participation in the ‘Festa delle Erbe’ in Forni di Sopra
Forni di Sopra (Udine), 7 June 2025 - On the occasion of the traditional Festa delle Erbe held in Forni di Sopra, we had the pleasure of participating, bringing with us the contents and objectives of the Nettle project.
During the day, we had the opportunity to present to the public the Nettle project, which is dedicated to the valorization and rediscovery of alpine plants and their potential use in food and cosmetics.
The event provided us with an important opportunity to engage directly with the local population, gathering valuable testimonies and traditional knowledge on the daily relationship with plants in the area. The dialogue with residents and participants at the event confirmed the interest of the population and enriched our journey.
The NETTLE Project Team at the CIEP Conference in China!
🌍 We’re excited to share that our team from the University of Udine took part in the session “Frontiers in Food Functionality and Nutritional Health” during the Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP), held in Guangzhou, China, and organized by the School of Food and Health at Beijing Technology and Business University.
🌿 We presented our contribution titled:
“Structural Design for Enhancing Food Nutritional and Technological Functionalities”,
focused on the NETTLE project, which explores innovative strategies for extracting bioactive compounds from alpine herbs using advanced methodologies. Our goal is to harness the natural potential of these plants for applications in both food products and cosmetic creams.
🌐 The conference was a key opportunity for international exchange among researchers, experts, and academic institutions from around the world.
We’re proud to have contributed to this global dialogue on innovation in food and health research, and we look forward to future opportunities for scientific cooperation and discovery.
NETTLE Project Shines at unibz Science Live Event
The NETTLE project participated in the vibrant Science Live. Get curious! event on November 14, 2025. This engaging public festival transformed unibz's Bolzano campus into interactive "Gardens of Knowledge" with 28 stands showcasing research across evolution, innovation, sustainability, and more.
Families, kids, and the general public flocked to our stand, where visitors rolled up their sleeves to make their own oleogels infused with bioactive compounds from alpine herbs. These hands-on demos highlighted NETTLE's mission to valorize cross-border alpine plants for sustainable food applications, using green extraction techniques to unlock antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
Adding fun to learning, participants played memory card games featuring project plants, sparking curiosity about biodiversity and potential uses in everyday products from foods to cosmetics.
The event was a hit, supporting direct connections between research and the community.
Stay tuned for more NETTLE updates on alpine innovation!
NETTLE Brings Alpine Magic to Le Mille e Una Scienza Festival
Following our success at unibz Science Live, the NETTLE project lit up Le Mille e Una Scienza - youth-focused science festival held November 15, 2025, at Castel Mareccio in Bolzano. Themed "From the Immensely Small to the Immensely Large," this vibrant event drew families and young explorers to interactive labs, stands, and shows celebrating STEAM wonders.
At our stand, eager kids and visitors turned into mini-scientists, crafting custom oleogels loaded with potent extracts from alpine herbs. To top it off, our plant-themed memory match game had everyone matching species, unlocking fun facts on sustainable extraction and circular bioeconomy.
Grateful for the festival's energy - catch us at more outreach adventures soon!
Synergy Event – “Valorization of biomolecules for food and non-food applications”
On November 21st, 2025, the Nettle project took part in the Synergy Event on “Valorization of biomolecules for food and non-food applications,” hosted by the University of Udine at the Rizzi Scientific Library.
