Title: Microscopic gyration with dissipative coupling
Speaker: Arnab Saha, Calcutta University
Abstract: Microscopic gyrators, including Brownian gyrators (BGs), require anisotropic fluctuations to perform gyration in non-equilibrium conditions. In a typical BG set-up with an isotropic colloidal particle, the anisotropy sets in by coupling the degrees of freedom (DoF) with the external, anisotropic potential confining the particle and the difference between the distinct temperatures along the DoF. Contrary to a typical BG, here we have considered an over-damped, anisotropic Brownian particle (an ellipsoid), trapped in an isotropic potential in two dimensions (2D). Instead of the trap, the DoF are coupled by the difference between the longitudinal and transverse frictional drags experienced by the ellipsoid, together with a finite tilt in its orientation due to its chirality. The coupling is dissipative and it is associated with the intrinsic properties of the ellipsoid. We have shown that such an ellipsoid exhibits a steady-state gyration in the isotropic trap. Next, we have considered a granular, chiral, ellipsoid in 2D, now being subjected to athermal, anisotropic fluctuations. Unlike the previous case, there is no confinement. However, the coupling between the velocity components of the granular ellipsoid remains dissipative as before. We have shown that such an inertial, granular ellipsoid can automatically rectify the fluctuations and perform gyration, where Coriolis force contributes predominantly.

Title: Advancing model reduction techniques: deep learning approaches for homogenization and reduced order modeling
Speaker: Jun Sur Park (박준서), KIAS
Abstract: This presentation introduces the application of deep learning approaches in two model reduction techniques. The first part focuses on homogenization of multiscale elliptic equations. Multiscale equations with scale separation are often approximated by the corresponding homogenized equations with slowly varying homogenized coefficients (the G-limit). We develop a physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) algorithm to estimate the G-limits from the multiscale solution data. Unlike the traditional approaches, our approach does not rely on the periodicity assumption or the known multiscale coefficient during the learning stage. The second part focuses on nonlinear-manifold reduced order modeling of high-dimensional dynamical systems. The latent variables are learned through an autoencoder and the latent dynamics are constructed by a neural network-based model that embeds thermodynamic laws through the GENERIC formalism. An abstract error estimate is established, which provides a new loss formulation. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of tLaSDI, which exhibits robust generalization ability, even in extrapolation.
