YOUNG ALUMNI PANEL -- SATURDAY – 11:30 AM

Moderated by Prof. Joe Fields, Southern Connecticut State University

Many of our math students are getting excited jobs in data science and analytics, and the math community can learn from their experiences. We have invited some of them to tell us about it!

Sam Gaudet (Babson College 2018) works in data analytics at Wayfair. At Babson, where every student is a business major, Sam came as close to being a math major as one could ever get, taking nearly all of the elective courses in mathematics and statistics. As a senior he was one of five students who lobbied two faculty members to lead an independent study seminar course in the areas of pure mathematics not routinely part of Babson’s curriculum. The group reported on topics from algebra, analysis and topology.

Nilay Bhatt (CCSU 2017). Nilay currently works at Optum (part of UnitedHealth Group) as a Data Scientist. He works on creating machine learning models that help predicted diseases for early prevention as well as disease progression. He is currently working on implementing and understanding machine learning use cases for digital identity and using Machine Learning in cyber security. He was part of winning teams in the Collegiate Mathematics Competition in 2014, held at SCSU and he had presented his undergraduate research in Graph Theory, in the summer of 2017. Nilay is also the recipient of the Henry Bernard Distinguish Student award which was presented to him by SCSU in 2018. His area of interests are Ethical AI, Graph theory, Inclusive ML, security research and understanding exploits from software vulnerabilities. In his free time, he volunteers at homeless shelters and works with different hospitals with his data science knowledge.

Rachel Ehrbar (Holy Cross 2008) is currently a second year PhD Student in Biostatistics at Boston University. She graduated from Holy Cross in 2008 after which she worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for the General Medicine Research group. While working at BIDMC she completed her MA in Biostatistics from Boston University. After completing her degree, she worked at the Department of Veterans Affair for the Million Veteran Program as a data analyst for five years prior to returning to school.

Michelle Wu (Bentley 2019… about to graduate!) is a senior at Bentley University, majoring in actuarial science and minoring in data technology. After graduating this December, she will be joining Wayfair as a full-time business analyst. Previously, she has interned as a data analyst at both Wayfair and Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance. She has taken several data analytics related courses at Bentley (Regression Analysis, Data Science, Data Mining, Database Management Systems).

ANALYTICS/DATA SCIENCE GRADUATE SCHOOL PANEL -- SATURDAY – 1:30 PM

Moderated by Prof. Eric Ruggieri, College of the Holy Cross

When college mathematics majors ask for advice about graduate school, most faculty members default to the MS/PhD programs in mathematics departments that we attended for our own graduate training. There are, however, a large number of professional master’s degree programs, usually only one year, that prepare people for jobs in industry. Mathematics majors are great

candidates for these programs, and today we have four of our own to tell us about opportunities in those programs. We have representatives from four programs to tell us more:

Babson College MSBA: Represented by Nathan Karst Program page: https://www.babson.edu/academics/graduate-school/ms-business-analytics/

Bentley University: Represented by Nathan Carter Program Page: https://www.bentley.edu/academics/graduate-programs/masters-business-analytics

Southern Connecticut State University: Represented by Aaron Clark
