For nearly 10 days Americans watched the intermittent reports as Hurricane Nerva, one of the most destructive storms in recent memory, formed in the Caribbean and made its way towards Mexico. Upon reaching the Yucatán the previously weak storm rapidly gained in strength, eventually causing 108 deaths and over 6 billion in damages. While aid and international relief efforts poured into the peninsula Nerva had other plans.
After the tragedy wrought in the Yucatán, we all came together and prayed for both the Mexican people and that no one else would have to suffer. Nerva offered faint signs of hope by losing strength and being downgraded to a category 1. The same as before though, this most unprecedented of hurricanes fooled everyone and upgraded to a category 5 before slamming into Texas. Along its multi-day journey over Dixie Hurricane Nerva killed 13 people and caused 56 billion dollars worth of damages. Only upon reaching Michigan, LN did the storm finally dissipate and free us from a national nightmare, as we began the long process of recovery.
Mere hours after Nerva had passed, Dixians of all creeds and backgrounds, of all classes and religions started to help. Donations were made to Mexico and thousands of selfless volunteers joined up with state and local officials to help where they could. Dixians proved themselves too strong to be taken down by Hurricane Nerva and will recover stronger than ever. When the next storm comes, we'll be ready.
Recovery efforts are still ongoing and there is no shortage of the need for volunteers! Please visit one of the following links to donate or volunteer.
