Nerea Becerra Tomás is a Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Researcher at the NUTRISAM (Research Group in Nutrition and Mental Health) at the Rovira i Virgili University. She has a strong background in nutritional epidemiology and is an expert in systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Her research line has focused on understanding the role that diet (including foods, nutrients and dietary patterns) plays in the risk of developing different chronic diseases.
She holds a PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism from Rovira i Virgili University (2017). During her doctoral studies, she investigated the association between dietary factors and the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. During her postdoctoral training, first at the Human Nutrition Unit of the Rovira i Virgili University (2018-2020) and secondly at the University of Valencia (2020-2021), she conducted extensive research on the role of the Mediterranean diet, legumes, dairy products, nuts, fruits and vegetables on the risk of cardiometabolic diseases and cardiovascular disease mortality. From 2021 to 2023, she was a Research Associate at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College London. She worked in the Continuous Update Project (CUP) funded by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International, conducting systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses on the role of food, nutrition, and physical activity on cancer. Currently, she is working at the NUTRISAM group investigating the association between prenatal lifestyle factors and neurocognitive and neurobehavioral development in the offspring in the ECLIPSES study.
