Carnivorous plants

Carnivorous plants are simply plants that have evolved over thousands of years. Since these plants usually grow on very nutrient-poor soils and still require nutrients to grow, they have shaped and adapted their leaves in a variety of ways in order to obtain nutrients from other sources; from insects!

Today there are over 1000 different species known, only around 15 of them are native and can be found in Central Europe. In general, carnivorous plants are divided into 17 genera.

In recent years I have specialized on the cultivation of Nepenthes, the so-called pitcher plants. This genus of plants, which includes over 120 different species, is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, northern Australia and the Seychelles, with the majority found in Borneo and Sumatra. Nepenthes mostly grow in tropical rainforests, where a distinction is made between lowlands and highlands. In the lowlands, Nepenthes often grow in dense jungle and get temperatures of 22-30°C. Highland Nepenthes, on the other hand, like to grow on foggy mountain peaks, where the vegetation is very flat. In the highlands, for example on Mount Kinabalu (Borneo), temperatures reach a maximum of 22°C during the day, although the temperature can drop close to freezing at night.

When cultivating Nepenthes, it is important to make the culture as close to nature as possible so that these plants can grow well. You can find more about my culture conditions in the table of contents.
