Neo soul - Funk - Soul - Rock Jazz
What this is about..
I wanted be able to play and sound like Toby Smith / Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai), Joe Sample (Crusaders), Norman Foster (for what he did with Chaka Khan on Through the Fire), Incognito, Michael McDonald, Al Jarreau, you got the point and probably see a pattern.. but... HOW..?
So, first attempt was to learn guitar at the age of 40. Yes, fourty.
Once I had lost my fear of playing music in front of and with others by jamming out in some NYC studios (and yes, I went there with a G, D and C chord... boy did they make me up my game..), I went back to the piano, which I had learned as a kid... and I hated it back then... Those finger exercises, classical music, it just did not work for me. And everyone around me was sooo much more talented and would play sooo much better.
But once I got the theory down and saw how easy it was to invert chords, add tensions like 7ths, 9ths, 11s and 13s, invert those.. it just started sounding like the music I loved so much.
About me - Carsten Koscher
Not gifted, not talented, but... seriously in love with neo-soul sounds, harmonies and melodies, and therefore committed to going the extra mile to learn, working hard to understand and feel the music...
