I am an officer of the University of Minnesota’s Math Club. Our group’s goal is to support undergraduate students in their journey as a math major beyond the classroom. We largely have three types of events: broadening their scope of math by bringing in graduate student speakers, preparing professional development needs by doing panels/workshop days, and fostering community by having casual social events.
Each week, we prepare baked goods to encourage students to attend and to brighten their day. I oversee managing officers on the baking team for Math Club and ensuring that we have the necessary supplies, as well as baking myself. I also help host our weekly meetings, plan activities, and find speakers for our talks and panels.
UMN's Math Alliance Student Chapter is committed to offering support for underrepresented students and fostering a welcoming community. Currently, we host weekly social events to check in with students, give advice where needed, and make sure that they are coming to campus. Each year, we have a special carne asada event. My responsibilities include planning future events and overseeing social events by organizing, advertising, and taking photos.
I was a teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota for Fall 2023 through Fall 2024. Throughout my teaching, I would take effort to remember that many students have had a difficult past with math. Unfortunately, math is quite notorious for causing anxiety, and even trauma. Because of this, I would always try to be uplifting to my students. Throughout my teaching duties, I’ve often held office hours more than required because students would ask for me to do so, and I would try to stay until all their questions are answered. Every semester, I would hold office hours during finals week and bring a dessert for the students. Anxiety can cause students to not get the grades they want, so I prioritized a relaxing study space where they can enjoy treats and ask questions. In case students were unable to come to office hours, it’s important to me to respond to students’ emails quickly with detailed answers, sometimes including step-by-step note attachments.
While I am planning on working in industry rather than academia, teaching and helping students will always have a special place in my heart.
