Plot Summary of Journey
In the 19th and 20th centuries, America lured many immigrants from Europe. Journey follows a Swedish family, the Dahlbergs, from their first settlement in Illinois in 1895—to an idyllic home in the mountainous region of Montana. The story focuses on the second generation family members as they seek to find their way—despite World War I, loss, grief, and unfulfillment.
Eldest sister, Brita—is left with weighty childcare and farming responsibilities while her husband travels to distant timber camps. Astrid, in contrast, remains in Chicago as a journalist and suffragette—her annual holiday visit not enough to assuage Brita’s load. Avery, once sullen and unmanageable, is becoming a man—his courage and strength challenged—his heart yielding to first stirrings of romantic love. Youngest sister, Evalina, grapples with an undefined learning disability—resulting in increasing struggles at school and at home.
In the wild and raw beauty of Mountain Sky horse ranch, tolerance is honed as native wisdom of the new homeland is exemplified by a Nimíipuu family. For Brita, Astrid, Avery, and Evalina, near impossible obstacles begin to give way to reconciliation and hope, ultimately bridging two continents and unifying expanded hearts.
