So far, over $750,000 has been raised from year-round and summer residents, with donations ranging from $7.00 to $100,000. We have just $200,000 more to go, and your gift of any size would be ever so welcome!
The simple skating rink placed on top of the tennis court for the past two winters was a success! We watched this small rink bring together our whole community – all ages, year-round and summer residents alike, plus skaters from off MDI. We hope it will bring even more people to NEH when life is quiet and beautiful . . . and there is so much to do outdoors. And that will enliven the town for all of us and help the merchants bring back to life a more vibrant economy.
What’s Next?
We will have the simple rink again for
the 2024-25 winter season, but then…
Community investment in the infrastructure needed to make this a more permanent rink, ideally open from Thanksgiving to mid-March. As the tennis courts are resurfaced next year, pipes will be installed beneath to provide a refrigeration system to keep the ice in shape, with condensers placed upon a concrete pad nearby. The nonprofit Town of Mount Desert Community Development Corporation is raising the necessary funds through tax-deductible donations to provide the Town
A group of folks in Mount Desert think a skating rink placed on the tennis courts in Northeast Harbor would be a great community-building way of having people of all ages get together for exercise and fun.
It could freeze sooner than many of the ponds and would be safer.
It could be a great afterschool activity, with kids able to walk themselves down there, rather than needing a car ride to a further location.
It could be an attraction for groups who might then go for hot chocolate at a local restaurant – e.g., a good economic development investment.
We have found a good source for the materials needed to make the rink, and we have worked with the fire department and public works to secure their help and support. But this would mostly be a volunteer operation to set up and maintain. The Town Community Development Corporation has agreed to collect donations and purchase the necessary equipment and the Selectmen have said they would accept the gift of such a rink if offered to become part of the Town’s assets.
