I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Economics at the University of Reading, United Kingdom. My research interests include economic history, development economics, labour economics, feminist economics and political economy of capitalism.

I am currently researching the contributions of post emancipation indentured labour migration from the Indian subcontinent to the Caribbean (1840s to 1914) to global capitalism. I examine how this form of un-free labour contributed to the global sugar production and consumption and the discourses that informed imperial and global policies on indenture migration. I also look at how caste dynamics back home determined the decision of indentured workers to remain in their country of indenture (in the Caribbean) or to return to the Indian subcontinent after their period of indenture.

My other area of interest is in gender and well being. I am working on a project where I look at the relationship between political conflict and domestic violence in Nigeria where I look at how persistent exposure to political conflict increases incidence of domestic violence once we control for institutional factors. My PhD research (submitted 2017) examined bargaining power and well being of women in sex work and domestic work in India.

Outside of  work I enjoy trying to grow veggies and flowers in our little garden. Here is a picture of lilies from earlier this summer.
